I have been to BKK MANY times and Pattaya a couple times, but my GF and I are planning to visit Phuket for first time in October.  It seems Patong is where most of the action is at night, but we would like to stay at a nice resort by the sea near Patong and centrally located.  Any suggestions for first time Phuket visitors as to which resort may allow us to experience Phuket the most in 1 week?  Thanks a bunch!

That's a very broad ask. If have the money then the Impiana Resort right on Patong Beach.  

The Kee resort is close to the beach, but also slap bang in the middle of the action.

I wouldn't spend the whole week in Patong.  Since you are bringing a GF, wouldn't a quieter night or two be desired?  Karon or Kata beaches are quite nice and there are plenty of good food choices.  They have some outdoor bar complexes and a little nightlife so you can probably find some distractions.  Frankly turning around on the beach and looking up and seeing the big white Buddha is to me worth a day or two.  It really is quite serene.  And if you are really bored, you can take a taxi up to Patong and back.
