Serious question

Featured Replies

Sorry but I am not able to access certain areas of TV connect, so I will ask the question here.

I hired a lawyer in Canada to obtain my original copy of my divorce from the courts which she did. I then requested that she send it priority mail which she didn't. She sent it regular mail. It has now been 26 days since she mailed my divorce certificate. Can I from that length of time assume that I will probably never see it.

She also sent me an scanned email with a copy of it but I am certain I cannot use this to get married.

Thank you.

I believe that the Thai authorities require proof of your freedom to marry.

As I recall this comes in the form of a certificate from one's embassy in Thailand. In my case (British subject) I had to complete a declaration at my embassy AND produce my original Decree Absolute.

Looks like the process is similar for Canadians http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/thailand-thailande/consular_services_consulaires/marriage_thailand-marier_thailande.aspx?lang=eng

It is still possible for the original to arrive after 26 days. Might be a good idea to visit the post office for your postcode area - sometimes they have items which have not been delivered due to being incorrectly addressed.

I am aware of the affirmation of freedom to marry that is required from my embassy in order to marry a Thai national and thank you for your response.

As said you are waiting for your decree absolute which is important.

Ordinary post to Thailand from other country's even with correct address can take a good while,  my pension people sent me stuff ordinary post and one took 6 weeks.

  • 2 weeks later...

Your lawyer deserves a kick up the backside for posting such an important original document by normal mail.

He or she should be required to obtain an official copy and get it to you asap by courier.

After 39 days I think you can be fairly confident that it is "lost".

Good luck to you.

If for some reason it went Surface Mail then I would reckon on about six weeks.  I'm not sure if Surface Mail is still an option, though.

I sent her head office a scathing email after they sent me a bill for the balance owing after I had paid a $250.00 retainer the day after she informed me she sent it regular mail after I told her to send it to me Fed Ex 1st class priority mail. I informed them that I did not under any circumstances consider this case closed until i received my original document. She was made to go back and request the document again and was told by her head office that once she obtains the original document she is to send it Fed Ex 1st class priority mail at her expense.

If she only listened to her clients request the first time I would be married by now and she wouldn't be working for free.
