old restaurants on Samui

Featured Replies

I started coming to Samui around 86. Most of the restaurants from then are long gone. The ones that I remember from those times that are still there are Angela's in Maenam & Will Wait in Nathon. Does anyone else have old places not connected to hotel/bungalows that still exist?

Maybe "Twins" in Maenam has also been there about that long..?
There must be a few restaurants in Chaweng too – and perhaps also Lamai – that has been along for ages; but my Samui-memory unfortunately only goes 15-years back.

"Will Wait" in Nathon is still a much visited place.

86 was no Will Wait in Nathon, but in Lamai. Maybe, first was Tom's Backery. Reggae Pub was at the beach road opp. the now Centara Grand. Actually I can't remember 1 non bungalow restaurant, which is still here since 86, in Nathon Sunset maybe, Ninja was later, Angelina was later too as far as I remember.

Sabainglae outside Hin ta / Hin ya is still there but now overpriced and the food went bad 10 years ago.

Angela's has not changed owner it is still owned and run by Angela, only the name has changed to reflect the cuisine she does now. However most of the bakery things are still available. It is much more than it once was.

I have removed the incorrect information that was posted!

The oldest restaurant I can think of is on the corner opposite Max Murphys in Naton. It burned down a decade ago but is still ran by the same lovely lady & family who always come and say hello.

Thanks for update. There was an article in the local news a few years back about some brawl in Angelas and "the new male farang owner", that's from where I had the info and didn't return to Angela's for another chocolate cake. Maybe it was leased out and she took it back..?

The only danger of note there is the road :)

Angela's Bakery has changed owner and is now "Angela's Diner" and not any longer what it once was – whilst "Will Wait" in Nathon is still a much visited place.

Where are you getting your info?  Somewhere around Camp Beer Chaweng ?Angela still there & this could be damaging to her business.

Yes I agree with Rooo, as pointed out by Sticky, in his comment, ^   there has been no problems or changes at Angela's,.....  only a paint job and food and bread as good as always

There was another farang owned restaurant, closer to Soi 4 which has been closed for years, perhaps that is the one Khun Per is referring too...?

To add to the list, Gai's Restaurant at the corner of Soi 5 in Maenam must be one of the older restaurants around?

Quite honestly I don't see why it matters, whether a restaurant is old or new,  we have many great  choices .... and even if an old restaurant is still around it may have changed hands over the years..

I decided to remove the mis-information that was posted regarding Angela's .... I think that only fair!

I believe to remember it was from one of the two, both former printed half-monthly papers – Samaui Gazette and Samui Express – writing the story, about same time when changes were made to the front Angela's.

Not my intention to spread wrong information – very sorry for that, which I excuse...:wai:

There is no truth in that. It was never leased out. There has never been a brawl. I would love to see the article.

I eat lunch there every day from Dec1999 to the present and I assure  you nothing has changed. you are perfectly safe to come for a chocolate cake.

Agree it moved location quite a few years ago but if anything the food is better and a more varied menu.

Perhaps he is thinking about Sonja's Bakery. There was a farang that opened in the same place, I recall there was some trouble there with the owner in the street quite naked, it was shut down after that.

I think Pee Soon in Chaweng is also one of the 'older' restaurants.

Is Pee Soon still open?

I thought it temporarily moved to near Prego when they renovated that night market area, but then closed down there. Haven't seen him open anywhere else.

Not sure about '80's, but the Happy Elephant in Bophut, FV has been open since the early '90's at least.

I thought he was back on the night market.

Last time I visit his restaurant is a few years back though.

Pee Soon has not been open for over a year , the family currently lives in Bangkok.

What night market? There are many on Chaweng now. But not one was there in the 80es.

I never said it was a night market in the '80's. I was asking if Pee Soon was still open elsewhere after it had moved.

The area I mentioned was a small area off Chaweng Lake Road, roughly behind / next to where Mit Samui restaurant is now located. Wasn't really  night market as such, just a rough patch of ground with a few quite basic seafood restaurants ( though very good), and stalls, that was only open at night.

Later Mit Samui opened and became really popular, and a few small drink shacks opened, then the whole site was cleared and redeveloped into the night food market it seems to be today. Pee Soon and all the other small restaurants disappeared and Mit got the prime spot in the new development, where they now seem to cater to the Chinese mass market.

Back in the days when there was only one 7-11 and only one international ATM - both in Nathon - the Chaokoh restaurant (opposite the far end of the night market) was the first to open in Nathon. Yes, there were some little hole-in-the-wall places too. But he family built this in the late 1970s and very successfully catered for weddings and other big social functions for many years.

Their popularity died away in the 90s when the police and other government offices began to de-centralise, and today the upper 3 floors are unused (including the huge ballroom) but the restaurant on the ground floor still remains remains in use.

Incidentally, it was almost next door to also the only bakery on the island, too, the Roungthong Bakery (also still there).

I thought 7-eleven began in Thailand in 1988 with CP All's area license agreement..?

Quite possibly!

But when there was just one 7-11 on Samui, Chaokoh Restaurant was already long-established, having been the first significant eatery to open there.

Sorry if I confused anyone.
