....as regards getting to sleep ?

Having finally sussed out how the 3mg is effective for me is doubling the intake to 6mg likely to remove the odd occasions when I dont seem to nod off.....??

It might.

People differ in their response to melatonin...and to further complicate things, because it is generally classed as a nutritional supplement in the countries that manufacture it, rather than a pharmaceutical, there is a lack of regulation/quality control so that the actual amount of active ingrediant can be less than labelled and this is variable by brand.

Personally, for myself, 5-6 mg melatonin is a normal dose, and I also find it wears off fairly quickly so repeat doses after a few hours have elapsed, if necessary, also works fine for me. However  your mileage may vary.

I'm pleased to read that. I'll double up next month in Thailand and see how it goes

Thanks for response

I inquired at my local baan nork pharmacy and was told it is not sold legally in Thailand - is that correct? Or is a prescription needed?

You can't buy it in Malaysia either but you can in Singapore

This is not correct (that it is not sold legally)

There is one preparation of it (Circadin, by Merck) registered as a pharmaceutical in Thailand. It is only 2 mg, and it is category D, no prescription required. But extremely likely to be found in a "ban nork" pharmacy.

In addition a variety of formulations, of various doses.  categorized as nutritional supplements can be found here. I order it online from lazada.

Thank you Sheryl - they may know it by the other name... but did you mean "extremely likely" or unlikely? Either way, I guess I can buy it in CM on my next visit... I have had friends recommend it often... your informative posts are interesting and appreciated...

Sorry, I meant unlikely.

For some reason the (usually untrained) staff at small town pharmacies seem to often wrongly say things are "illegal" when they are simply unavailable at their particular pharmacy.

No need to wait till you go to CM, just buy it online and lazada will usually deliver in a matter of days http://www.lazada.co.th/shop-health-food-supplements-weight-management/?q=melatonin&searchclickposition=cat2

ok thanks - I am just always hesitant when buying pills/medicine, but as I get older, there seems to be more need... I will give it a try.

And yes, though our local pharmacist is fairly knowledgable, she seems to only really know what she does stock. After that, she can be lost.

Hello,

I've been taking 2.5 to 3 mg melatonin for approximately 16 years without any adverse effect for severe insomnia!  But, don't take more than 3 mg because of frequent and prolong nightmares!
