USA VISA expiration date

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Next week I play on filing an I-130 petition to acquire a VISA for my wife so we many move to the USA. Does anyone know the Expiration date on the VISA?

From what I am reading it seems to be 6 months. Can we request a later date?

Thanks!!!

Ed

You are aware that the I-130 process will take a considerable amount of time before a visa will be available for issue?  Someone just posted one year for location he must use in USA.  Not sure if you are eligible to file in Thailand but even then it will still take some time for approval.  Sorry can not answer the visa validity question as changed mind after getting approval and decided to stay in Thailand so never applied for actual visa.

I received an Email from the BKK field office regarding processing times. That is what led me to this "expiration" question. See below

Per our website, our current average processing time for I-130 petitions filed locally with the Bangkok Field Office is 1.4 months. This is not a guarantee in processing time, but merely an average.

6 months would not be enough for us to save money/ job hunt prior to leaving... so I am cautious about spending 420 dollars now only to need to start the process again later.

Not sure how it is run now but when we used the system was still called INS and you had one year to apply for the actual visa from Embassy after approval provided to make application.  Not sure if done in one application now or not but used to be separate actions.
