PHUKET: A man was charged with lese majeste early this morning after several hundred angry people gathered in front of his house in Samkong to protest against his negative social media posts regarding His Majesty the King on Thursday.

By 8pm last night, about 20 people gathered in front of Suthee Arammetapong’s soymilk shop looking for him. As users posted about the gathering on social media via Facebook posts and live videos, the incident went viral and by 1am, about 500 angry people had gathered outside the shop.

Initially, the group was supposed to meet outside Mr Suthee’s shop on Thursday, but he was picked up by the police who released him without pressing any charges. This reportedly riled the mob even more.

As the mob grew larger, 30 police and military officers were dispatched to guard the shop and discourage any violence. Phuket Provincial Police Commander Teerapol Thipjaroen arrived at the shop at about 1:15am and urged the crowd to remain calm.

PHUKET:-- A large group of people gathered in front of a soybean milk shop in downtown Phuket late Friday night to protest against the shopowner’s son whom they alleged of posting a message his Facebook deemed violating the lese majeste law.

The protest eventually prompted a team of police and military personnel led by Pol Col Kamol Osiri to be rushed to the scene in Muang district to maintain peace and order.

The officials tried to take the protesters to disperse and go home but without success as the latter insisted on the officials to take legal action against the alleged offender.

Later on Pol Maj-Gen Thirapol Thipcharoen, the provincial police commander, personally arrived at the scene to try to negotiate with the protesters who, however, refused to disperse.
