Tribal villagers mourn late King

Thammarat Thadaphrom

PHETCHABUN, 22 October 2016 (NNT) – Tribal villagers in northern provinces this week held a religious ceremony to grieve and express condolences over the passing of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

More than 1,000 Hmong, Yao, and Lisu hill tribe villagers in Phetchabun, Phitsanulok, and Loei were gathered to perform a traditional ritual believed to send His Majesty to heaven. The ritual was led by nine mouth organ players.

After the ceremony, tribal villagers paid homage and respect to the King before his portrait. They also burnt joss papers and other offerings for His Majesty. The practice is well known in Thailand and other countries in Asia. It is to ensure that the spirit of the deceased has lots of good things in the afterlife.

Afterwards, representatives of the War Veterans Club who took part in the ceremony offered food and drinks to the villagers and other participants.

Tribal people also signed a condolence book to express their sorrow at the loss of the King.
