Hi all.

Has anyone got first hand experience with AIS Figre Optic Internet connection?

I currently have TOT Fibre Optic and it is fine, good connection and reliable, but I'm paying nearly twice the price for 30 Mbps that AIS are asking for 50 Mbps.

I live near Laemdin and my house is close enough to their "box" to get free connection.

I went to Ink World who appear to be acting as agents for AIS and they were very helpful (they found my house on Google Earth to measure the distance) and seemed to know what they were talking about. Installation could be done in less than a week.

My problem here is that even though I would be saving a handy 650 Bt a month by switching to AIS will they be as reliable?

I'd appreciate any feedback from AIS Fibre Optic Users on the Island.

Thankyou.

I got it installed 1 month ago. Very fast and reliable. No throttling of international connection like True cable used to do. It's fast 24 hours.

I also had the Inkworld guys process my application. It would cost the same if you went directly to AIS, but the Inkworld guys will assist in everything.

What do you pay currently?

Why not go to ToT and ask for a change in tariff?

Prices have dropped significantly.

I have done change twice over the years (speed, price).

Walk to the office and ask (sign form), drive home and (speed) change done.

Last time they did a nice error.

I have 35/15 (measured) and pay 700 (plus tax).

I won't complain

I live in western Bangkok and have had AIS Fibre 50/10 for almost 4 months now.   Totally satisfied...fast international speeds.   Regarding reliability, I had 100% uptime for the first 3 months and 1 week....then I had my first downtime for about 2 hours early one night. And another time about a week later the international speed was slow for about 12 hours.  I called AIS in both cases, talked to English speaking reps....problems fixed shortly afterwards.   And just as additional info the time the international speed was slow, when the rep called me back to confirm the fix the rep said they had had a brief problem with their international gateway.    Since those two times it's been back to 100% uptime.   Yeap, knock on wood (my head) totally satisfied.

Thanks for the responses.

I phoned the 1100 freephone number last week and asked TOT if I could change my package to the 35 for 990 Bt deal and I'm waiting for them to get back to me. My problem there is that the line is in my landlords name so I guess they have to go through him.

To 'Mole' and 'PIB' in particular that's the kind of information I was after, the aftersales service I get with TOT (1100 freephone number again) is very good so I was hoping it would be the same with AIS.

If TOT alter my package I'll stick with them as it's a case of better the devil you know.

Thanks again.

When you look at the different prices of 3BB, AIS, and True fiber/DOCSIS plans there are some "wide" variations in price for basically the same/similar speed plan.  I'm sure each company has done a business analysis on coverage areas where they compete combined with those areas where they are the sole provider (i.e., have a captive audience).   From that analysis they decide what prices will  bring in the maximum revenue.

The more competition there is and when other ISPs are allowed into areas where another ISP had a captive audience, hopefully prices will continue to come down.   So glad to see AIS and 3BB making big in-roads into the high speed/fiber optics market.  I can tell already it's making True drop its prices but TOT (govt owned) will probably drag its feet in lowering prices too much.

Slightly off topic, but when these companies do the installations and the fibre runs into the house:

What is the quality of work like?

Do they run the cables around the house through trunking?

Or do they run the cabling around the wall, or skirting naked?

Are the cables black or white? Or are you given a choice of colour?

Asking for reasons of aesthetics.

I am currently on VDSL, but want to change to fibre optic.

Based on the Fibre 50/10 installation done at my house

Quality of work: good

Cable in trunking: no

Cable color: black except  the last few meters where a different color cable (usually yellow or white...mine was yellow) is run from the cable termination box to the router.  This black cable is designed for the outdoors to withstand stress/sun/wind/rain and is little stiff when its metal wire messenger/support cable is still attached (same kind of metal messenger wire that is included with phone/xDSL/cable internet lines).  But the cable they use for the last few meters has no metal wire incorporated and is very flexible.

By cable termination box I mean a little box not much bigger than a pack of cigarettes where the optical cable run from outside is terminated at/connected to....that box will be place inside your house.  Then from that point the separate optic cable is connected to the box and run to the router.  The incoming black optical cable is designed for outside use...designed to withstand stress/sun/wind/rain just like all the other cables strung on power poles.

Really no difference than the earlier ADSL or DOCSIS/cable installation done at my home over the years by TOT and True.  Also keep in mind a fiber optics cable is physically smaller than other type of internet lines like xDSL, cable, etc.....the fiber optics cable minus the supporting messenger wire is only about the size of the lead in a pencil.    I would not worry about the  aesthetics.

This AIS Fibre installation video may help...and the termination box they used for me was smaller than the one in this video.  And note where ever they were installing this apparently it was to replace a TOT installed system where the router was strapped to the wall...but maybe the residence owner did that...some people really have self-inflicted sloppy looking computer hookups in their home.
