Hi Thaivisa members,

 

Need some honest advice here. I have recently terminated my employment with Thai company and wanted to know if I could extend/keep using my social security card by paying privately to the fund myself?  And if so, how does it work and for how long can I do this?

 

Some people say your medical benefits covered under the social security plan, will cease to exist when you stop working. Others do say, you can keep using it by paying privately?

 

Anyone experience with this?

You can extend on personal title. You need to report to the SSO in the area you live within 6 months after resignation of job.

I had to show Yellow Tabien Baan, Pink ID, Passport, wife ID, her Tabien Baan. But that was/is in Ayutthaya where I seemed to be the first foreigner asking for the extension

Initially they said NO, I asked them to contact the Bangkok office and check their own website, both were clear that even foreigners could extend.

After they confirmed it was done in an hour....

Then you can do as above (within 6 months of leaving).

It will cost you about 432 baht a month to continue on your own.

If you qualify, you need to contact the SS office to arrange to make payments.

You will just need identification if you don't have your SS Card / number.  They can easily find your info in the computer.

It's a simple form to fill out.

 

As mentioned above, you need to have been paying into the system for for 12 or 13 months (?) prior to leaving employment.  Also as mentioned, you need to get this done within 6 months.

 

You can continue to use your card for 6 months without arranging to continue, but don't go over or you have to start over with new covered employment.

 

You can continue paying on you own as long as you want.  There is no cutoff age limit.

You can also arrange auto pay from your savings account. They suggested this at the Bkk office I helped a friend do. He gets full medical at the "selected hospital" from their list, or any govt hospital in the SS System.  Suggest you look at the list and do as much homework as possible. Wherever possible it benefits you to select the best hospital nearest you. Your SS Card or actually the paperwork will have a hospital assigned if you dont ask about choice and make a selection , or if there is only one hospital near where you live.

Hi, no cut off age!  Are you sure?  If yes, that's fantastic news. Medical cover for the rest of your days for less that 500 baht a month. It's worth teaching for 13 months just to get it.

As long as you get coverage under Thai social security system before age 60 you can continue to pay monthly. They will not accept new applicants even if working over age 60.

What interests me, is that I was stopped 1500 baht a month by my employer, and I was only part time, was I being ripped off or over charged?

In my case they insisted no need to pay for the 6 months after I stopped work. After that I set up the direct debit with my bank. In Bangkok,  go to the Silom branch rather than the head office. As regards choosing a hospital, in Bangkok all the big/good ones will be "full" (i.e. their quota is full) and you'll have to choose some crap little private hospital like Kluay Nam Thai or a less well known government hospital like Loetsin. My experience at one of the better SS hospitals (Camillian, now withdrawn from the system) was only so-so. The doctors aren't nearly as good as in the best private hospitals and the system doesn't cover expensive imported medicines even if they are the only method of treatment. Typically, a specialist might only be available half a day a week, after 5pm, and there's a long queue.

I recently left my job with a Thai employer (September 30) and went to the Social Security Office at Silom to sign up as an individual payer in early October.

However, the Social Security Office officials indicated that I need to process and receive a retirement payment (I am over 55 years old) prior to processing my application as a single payer—and that this retirement payment would take 3 months to process. I understand that both the retirement payment and sign-up as a single payer could be completed concurrently until just recently. 

Does anyone have recent experience with this?  Thanks

You shouldn't have been paying over 750 baht. It sounds like your employer was taking their own employer's contribution back from you.
