High Blood pressure medication versus......

Recommended Posts

By doctors orders, I am taking medication against high blood pressure. Ever since, I noticed that my libido as well as my capability to produce a meaningful erection is greatly diminished.     Is there something to it or is this just in my head? (I am 64).

Would it be advisable to counterbalance this negative effect by taking Viagra/Cialis (on demand only) ? Yes / no ?  "Side effects" ? Compatibility anti high blood pressure medication versus viagra/cialis ?

* This is a serious matter. Currently, in order to produce a meaningful erection, I need the presence of 3 "hostesses", 5 angels dancing on the ceiling and the thunder of a Wagner Opera in the background. This can not possibly be a long term solution !
Thx & cheers.

I am 54 years old and am also on high blood pressure. The first couple of years on the meds the doctor would ask during routine check-ups if there was an issue getting an erection. At the time there was not, but lately I have noticed a decrease in libido (but it is not too bad yet).  Not much you can do other than diet, exercise and lose weight so that the meds are no longer required. However, even that does not guarantee that you will not have high blood pressure (could be genetic). Another thing to consider is that this is something that occurs as men age, there seems to be a large difference in libido between being 20 and being 54 (weird).

I would ask your doctor before taking Viagra just to be safe. Good luck.

In your case, as the E.D. seems to be directly linked to the introduction of your current B.P med I would definitely talk to your doctor about switching to another class of B.P. med that might not have the same side effect.

On the lack of libido ... that's not the same thing as E.D. Perhaps depression or another medication causing that?

Viagra is not about libido, only E.D.

If you choose to try an E.D. med, do discuss with your doctor. That are some medical conditions where taking those can be extremely dangerous.

That depends upon whether your blood pressure is now back in the normal range and is stable.  If not, Viagra and Cialis are both to be avoided.  Otherwise it should be OK, but check with your doctor.

ED is a common side effect of many BP meds and can often be corrected by a change in medication. Talk to your doctor about this and try change of BP meds first.

Do not take ED drugs without an OK from your doctor first as they do have a direct effect on the bblood vessels and blood pressure  - but before even asking for that, see if changing to a different medication removes the problem.

what BP meds (there are lots) in particular are suspect in cases of ED? I don't see ED contraindicated for the stuff that I take, ExforgeHCT...

It is listed - but as rare side effect

  • decreased interest in sexual intercourse

It can happen wioh many of them but varies with the individual. When it occurs, it is usually possible to find a class of drug that does not have that effect in that particular person.

Sound to me like you have the solution, must need quite a big bed, make sure you do not break it !  !

Joking aside recently I have been doing my best to loose weight as I may have to have surgery in February, so far I have come down from 140 to 128 kilos in about five weeks, my target is 110 kilos by Feb, and then below 100 post operation

I have done this by cutting out alcohol and severely limiting my food intake, something I never thought possible, and very limited exercising, like walking one hour a day

I am also undergoing Radiation and chemo that helps to curb my appetite, you would need to miss this bit !

My sex drive remains strong, but also my BLOOD PRESSURE has dropped to levels I have not seen in 15 yrs, (I am 71 yrs), generally around 112/63, at the moment, before it was around 160/80

Maybe if you are overweight, the above weight loss regime might just solve all your problems

significant weight loss when one is seriously overweight can contribute to a reduction in BP...this is usually associated with a healthy diet so that the implication is clear...eat healthily and lose weight and the issues will improve...

and it's very possible to do...just think about what you like to eat (exclude the obvious offenders like the twinkies and the chocolate) and manage it in a way that gives positive results...fad diets don't offer nothin' in this regard...

also works well with controlling blood glucose in diabetics...but daily monitoring is a must and keep a diary so that you can asociate what you've eaten with the readings...after a few months a pattern and a rhythm appears and you can make modifications to yer diet with predictable results...but this requires a routine and discipline, in my case anyway...

Actually even less significant weight loss for example 10 percent of body weight for an obese person can improve BP etc. Yes also eating healthy and moderate exercise always good regardless of weight.

I am the OP (for better of for worse)

.

The medication I am taking is called AMLODIPIN,10 mg in my home country and it sails under AMLOPINE 10 in Thailand.

Since this seems to be a very popular medication, I don't think it is the cause of my "ailment", otherwise it would have been taken off the market a long time ago. Or is it?

- Anyway, I will talk to my Doctor, although I am a bit hesitant because he is known as "Doc Holiday". Uuhhhh....

Cheers.

Yes. But it's still not a long term solution. Neighbors are starting to complain about the noise concerning the " Wagner Opera Thunder". 555

= In my case it can not be an "overweight" problem.

Cheers.

Different people react to different B.P. meds differently. There are various CLASSES of B.P. meds. If one of them, or even a number of them, aren't tolerated well, including side effects like E.D., then there is a hope that another one will be tolerated better without unacceptable side effects.

Sheryl's advice is always sound, unlike mine !! which is a different sound!! or a different med !

But I just wonder if changing to Tchaikovsky - 1812 Overture (Finale), might appease the neighbours, you will obviously need a good conductor to see all stay on the straight and narrow

Personally I do like the music   ! ! let me know if it works  ! !
