They Flew For China....mentions attack on CM....

The original name of the Chiang Mai Veterans of Foreign Wars post was named for Jack Newkirk, who was shot down south of Chiang Mai after a raid on Chiang Mai airport.  If you look at the Chiang Mai Veterans of Foreign Wars web site there are links to some stories about Jack Newkirk.

I found it interesting that in some of the Flying Tiger narratives they speak about the smoke (polluted) air as they flew to Chiang Mai.

There were a few Flying Tigers that visited Chiang Mai and the foreign cemetery some years ago for Veterans Day (US).  There were stories in the Chiang Mai English language papers.

There were also attacks on Lampang I believe.

Does anyone know the date of this particular mission?  Did CityNews/Life do a story on this before?

This is just one reference :  http://www.valorstudios.com/Flying-Tigers-AVG-Chaing-Mai-mission.htm

Just do a search for "attack on Chiang Mai" or "Flying Tigers attack Chiang Mai".  (Search also for AVG  American Volunteer Group)

EDIT:  From the old Chiang Mai VFW web site  :  http://vfw-chiangmai.org/first_site/newkirk/index.html

The story in the video begins; in 1940 long before the United States entered World War Two. Ha, ha, ha, I love it.

The formal name for the group (nicknamed the Flying Tigers) was the American Volunteer Group (AVG), being comprised for the most part of volunteers who began their campaign before the US formally entered the war in December of 1941.  The raid against the Japanese planes at the Chiangmai airport occurred on March 24, 1942, and supposedly that raid destroyed or damaged up to 15 Japanese airplanes on the ground.

While I don't believe any of the Flying Tigers were buried at the Chiang Mai Foreign Cemetery on the Chiangmai-Lamphun Road (located on the east side of the road roughly 400 yards past the beginning of the Gymkhana Club property), there is a memorial there to the group.  I'll attempt to attach a couple photos of two sides of the marble memorial:

Obviously you are not a student of history or you would have known that.

I am a Brit and even I knew about the AVG and the Flying Tigers many years ago.

Neither had the USSR, who didn't join the war against Japan until later in '45.  Ironically, France and England were the biggest losers in WW II.  I don't think it is laughable, just ironic.
