A work visa is a different proposition to a settlement visa. I don't know about the former but if she wishes to settle in the UK as the unmarried partner of a UK citizen, then read the pinned thread above "UK Settlement Visa Basics".

If she wants to work in the UK then she will need a Tier 2 (General) visa.

1. Overview

You can apply for a Tier 2 (General) visa if:

Getting sponsored

You need to have a certificate of sponsorship from a licensed sponsor before you can apply to come to the UK to work.

The work you do in the UK must relate to the work of your sponsor organisation.

She will also need to prove her English ability by:

  • passing an approved English language test with at least CEFR level B1 in reading, writing, speaking and listening, or
  • having an academic qualification that was taught in English and is recognised by UK NARIC as being equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or PhD

If she qualifies for this visa she will be able to bring her children; see 8. Family members from the above link.

Of course, if she were to settle in the UK as your friend's partner then she would be able to bring her children with her.

But from what you say

she does not qualify as an unmarried partner as they do not live together in a relationship akin to marriage.

So their options for settlement are:

  • marry in Thailand so she could apply immediately afterwards as his spouse,
  • apply as his fiance and they marry within 6 months of her moving to the UK and then apply for Further Leave to Remain as his spouse, or
  • he moves to Thailand and lives with her for at least two years so she could then apply as his unmarried partner.

Spouses and unmarried partners can work immediately they arrive in the UK, but fiances cannot work until they have been granted FLR after the marriage.

If they wish to consider settlement see the pinned topic TCA mentions (which is a little bit out of date) and Apply to join family living permanently in the UK and Guidance: Children: SET07
