There is a deep silent majority of ex-pats that shun Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket and Chang Mai as much  as possible. I talk to English speaking people about once a month. As far as I am concerned, you can apply remarks like the above to any big town in the world, with variants of course.

Big towns are not the normal habitat for human beings and it shows.

So go hang your complaints and get used to living in a town.

I rather like  the bit about  the old man going 1 kph down the middle of the road at midnight on his bike without lights. He's living it up for Christ's sake! Most people are safely tucked up in bed at that time but he's trying to get home from a whist party, a bit on the side, perhaps a wee  toke on something herbal with no 7 the backpackers and no 8 the ageing hippie.Whatever, and I bet he's not complaining!

There's nothing wrong with hippies in my view and I wish the honourable member cooked- see post  id 2 would not describe himself as an ex. imo it's not a state of mind you can ever really discard though you can drop some of the er more unsociable habits like not washing socks for 3 days etc.
