UNITED NATIONS: -- Former Portuguese Prime Minister António Guterres, has been sworn in as Secretary General of the United Nations during an inauguration ceremony at the organisation’s Headquarters in New York. He was appointed to the post in October.

From fear to trust

In his speech Guterres said that he aimed to inspire people to move from fear to trust of one another. He wanted to help forge a world shaped by the values of the UN charter.

Radical change

António Guterres said that the UN risked being overtaken by the global challenges it faced and needed to change. He set out radical plans to simplify and decentralize the organisation, and to make it more flexible.

Women remained a significant priority, the UN having previously failed to meet its target for complete gender parity by the year 2000. Guterres said that he planned to have met the target amongst his own appointments by the end of his term of office.

Tributes to Ban Ki-moon

Current Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who has been in post for ten years, received tributes from the Assembly.

In particular he was praised for the progress made under his leadership towards the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. His contributions to feminism, and to multilingualism at the UN, were also brought to the fore.

Ban Ki-moon will hand over his role to Guterres on 1 January.

I omitted to say he is also a communist. Items I have read since he was first nominated indicated his aims.

So no credible links?  What I found what this, which makes sense.

“On the contrary, we have refugee movements because of tyranny, of conflict and of terrorism,” he said.

Mr Guterres warned then that rejecting Muslim refugees would give Isis “a fantastic argument” and they would exploit “Western fears” to fuel their propaganda and take advantage of isolated Muslims.

But now they are milking more money from member countries than ever before. Time for them to go.

Dear All,

Antonio Guterres was Secretary-general of Portugal's Socialist Party, member of an european group of political parties founded by very "dangerous communists", as Willy Brandt, Olof Palme, François Mitterrand, Felipe Gonzalez and George Papandreou. Actually, they (were) are the epitome of democrats, and have preferred links to the Democrats in the USA.

This said, Mr. Guterres is a long term practising catholic, which I don't think puts him as a "muslim lover". What he surely is is a humanist, which he showed during his ten year term as UN Commissioner for the Refugees.

The up-mentioned comments may only be based on either of two things: sheer ignorance or - what is worse - right-wing radicalism. The kind of radicalism that can't distinguish a christian-democrat from a social-democrat from a ... rabbitt ;-)

This said, I hope that many of us that are expats can gain from the new UN's Secretary-General views, regarding the necessity of integration of expats in foreign societies, instead of their constant rejection that can only conduct to ostracism and blind views...
