Yes, you don't even need the IDP, UK license is all that is legally required. IDP may be helpful at police checkpoints though.

I agree 100% with above comment. I'm an Aussie, but I'm sure the same rules apply for UK visitors.

 

Police at roadblocks always accepted my IDP no problem, whereas there are many stories that offering your UK license only would not be enough, and the Police could fine you 200 baht. TIT. Inconsistency of rules interpretation is part of every day life.

 

Get an IDP just to be sure. It's a very small price to pay for peace of mind.

 

Rental companies will probably only want to see your proper UK license. They don't seem to care about IDP.

 

When I eventually applied for my Thai license, upon seeing my IDP, the processing guy said "ohhh ... you can drive anywhere in the world ... I give you Thai license easy."

 

He was right. Took 10mins.
