BANGKOK: -- AN ANTI-GRAFT activist yesterday filed a petition with the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) calling for an investigation into whether General Preecha Chan-o-cha, former permanent secretary of the Defence Ministry, was intent on concealing his unnumbered house from an asset declaration.

Srisuwan Janya, secretary-general of the Association for the Protection of the Thai Constitution, handed the petition to the NACC following a report that Preecha owned a large, unnumbered house in Phitsanulok that remains undeclared. Preecha reasoned that construction of the house had not yet been completed.

Srisuwan said that the house should have been included in Preecha’s declaration to the NACC by October 30, a month after his retirement from the Defence Ministry, as designated in the 1999 Counter Corruption Act.

Reminds me of old Steve Martin routine "You can have a million dollars and not pay taxes!"

"First, get a million dollars. When tax man shows up, say 'I forgot. I forgot to pay taxes on a million dollars"

More or less

"Referring to a series of controversies on alleged nepotism his family has faced, Preecha added: “This kind of scandal makes me sick. I don’t understand why they have to dig things out from my sons, my wife, and now my house.”

Simply unrepentant and arrogant. Make me sick reading such a comment.

I say he will go with '' Work was still going on, as it had not been completed at the time''. Unless of course, the new house party was well attended by some who object.

A comment made by someone who has grown up seeing backhanders as the normal way of doing business and not seeing anything wrong with it.  He sleeps well at night and it does not even enter his head that the way he is making money is wrong. He is just morally corrupt.

I would like to see the house's spirit house.... I have a theory that the more corrupt the owner, the bigger and more extravagant the spirit house is....

Agree totally, and no doubt you felt sick at least a million times when your idol and his puppets ruled.

Talk about being a persistent apologist! The topic is the junta, who took power 2.5 years ago and promised that everything would change. Do you remember that?

In truth, we really have no agreement. Corruption by the military are rarely investigated and people are jailed for asking or simply be at the site where the corruption took place. Elected politicians corruption will see corruption agencies and courts pulling all stops to charge and convict. May even see demonstrators on the streets. Worse if politicians on the wrong side of the colors. That is sick. All corrupted sides should get the same judiciary process. Can we agree on that?

It appears then that if you buy land and spend a lot of money in building a house on it, you do not own an asset until the whole house has been completed?   Strange, then, that the banks will lend you money to build the house on the strength of the value of the land on which it is being built.

This guy should be asked questions not only about this house but also about the value of his and his immediate family's total assets relative to his salary during his working life.

As someone mentioned the other day, over here most army Generals, high ranking police etc normally come from moneyed families of high ranking officials, the positioning themselves as high ranking police and military just ensures they can continue wealth generation.

It would be interesting to see how the family money was generated from a long family history of high ranking police and military Generals..... one could only guess.....

Pity asset checks don't actually seem to ask submitters to clarify the sources of their wealth, and to track back sources of wealth through families if their are anomalies, so people cannot simply say inheritance.

seriously, ... but Thaksin, ... get a grip.

Unless - of course - you mean that the generals were not held accountable under civilian governments, either. That would be a true statement.

Real information is not important to supporters of the junta any more than it is to the junta.

Time and again we see junta supporters are deceitful and attempt to stop the truth from coming out.

Scorecard's modus operandi is to divert attention away from the corruption he supports towards anything he defines as a bugbear, real/relevant or not. The point is to yak his mouth so we take our eye off the ball.

He is the dirty football player winding up the opposition and taking dives rather than actually playing the game.People like Scorecard have no interest in fairness, that's why they follow immoral people like the Thai elite.

His only contribution is to divert attention (twice), because he knows as well as the rest of us that he cannot defend the indefensible.

Has he no shame at all?

"But Thaksin..." - the refrain of a political scam artist.

Dah yeah sure buddy. We can swallow that. This is a going nowhere proposition. Kudo's to the petition guy but he is banging his head against a cement wall. These guys are tighter than a fat lady's girdle and you will never undo the laces.

But the thread is about this one, you know, the one that took over on an anti-corruption ticket.

Please see my previous post. You're obviously trying to vindicate what this lot do by accusing the last lot of doing the same. It'd be nice to get a true reaction to the OP without the "But but Thaksin" whinge.

All that money and power and not even the decency to have the adjoining plot of land cleared of thrash...

Says a lot about the mentality of these guys: I care for my business only, the next guy can go to hell!

Hope this great country will one day wake up and realize that they are being governed by complete and utter scum...
