We have decided to replace our 1999 Honda CRV with the new model. They now offer in Thailand the 2 WD model. I test drove both models at the auto show but couldn't tell any difference on the short test drive track. We probably wont use this vehilcle off road. My question is, is their any advantage to having the 4WD over the 2WD, considering we wont be using it offroad and doubtful we will be running into any snowy road conditions? The price difference is B100,000 for the 2000cc engine models although you do get a little better "trim" package with the 4WD model.

4WD is for ice, slush, snow, and mud. What about rainy conditions - is there one bit of better traction on wet roads?

I think 4WD is a silly add-on. At trade-in time, you'll get some of the extra money back, but surely not all of it. There are some models and markets where the buyers are so brainwashed that they all want 4WD. My kids in south Texas insist on 4WD, which they never use. It makes sense in northern Sweden, though.

Since the 4X4 on the CRV only works when the front wheels lose traction I doubt it affects the fuel economy very much. There is always the possibility of a situation when there is an accident or other emergency where you may want to go through the median strip to get to the opposite lane. I have seen MANY two wheel drive vehicles stuck trying to go through the median strip. Some road construction areas also get very slippery during a hard rain and the road is just basically mud. I would definitely pay the extra for the 4X4 option.

I looked very closely at the CRV but the 1,280,000 price tag choked me up a bit. I would have probably bought it if there were a diesel engine option available. I would guess the fuel economy is not too good with the gasoline engine. As it was I bought a new Ford Focus Ghia.

I've had a play in the new CRV, nice motors, lots of toys to play with, excellent brakes over the Fortuner, thinking of going for the 2.4L, but we'll see.

I think the way that 4wd affects fuel consumption is through the extra weight that is carried.
