One of my neighbours has gone totally deaf and lost the sight of one eye, he looks a bit wobbly as well, after "eating some bad pork".
Can't find out if it's food poisoning or some sort of parasite.

Any ideas?

Trichinosis

A parasite found in raw or undercooked pork and some other, less frequently consumed, meats (bear, walrus or horse ; possibly various tyoes of "bush meat". NOT beef or poultry...it can only occur in meat of animals which themselves are meat eaters.).

Rare nowadays in most developed countries due to better regulation of the livestock industry but still very much present elsewhere.

Pork that has been thoroughly cooked = no risk as cooking kills the parasite responsible.

Interestingly, this is thought to be the reason behind the prohibition against eating pork found in several religions.

Thanks Sheryl, you can always be relied on for an intelligent response.

It was suggested to me that the local pig farmers are using a lot of growth hormone as well, not sure how that effects the neural system.

I knew I shouldn't have had that walrus burger.

Just to be clear, though- are the OP's symptoms consistent with trichinosis, and is it common in Thailand?  A few weeks back, I saw someone eating what they claimed was raw ground pork marinated in some kind of sauce.  I was a little taken aback.

(Edit: and on an aside, it's interesting that Burger King ads are popping up on this thread...)

Trichinosis causes musclepain and periorbital edema, rarely serious chronic neurological damage as described.

I belive your neighbour was infected by Taenia Solium(ตัวตืดหมู)which causes neurocysticercosis with cronic neurological deficit.

Stay away from moo dip (หมูดิบ)
