PUSAN: -- Royal Thai Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Na Areenit on Monday presided over the formal launch of the RTN’s latest frigate worth about 14.6 billion baht at a shipyard in Pusan of South Korea.

He was accompanied by his wife, Mrs Pranee, RTN’s special advisor Admiral Rangsarit Sattayanukul and Thai naval attache in South Korea among others.

The frigate, named Tha Chine, was built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Company. It was adapted from Kwanggaeto Class destroyer and in compliance with the American standard.

And will permanently deployed halfway between Hua Hin and Pattaya just in case . . . . .

And the RTN will be patrolling offshore nearby tourist beaches to make sure those evil sand "beach beds" do not re-appear.

Latest rumor is that the submarine pens will be at Pattaya's recently vacated Bali Hai pier and the Navy will also use the Waterfront condo as the control tower for (stealth) submarine take-off and landings.

The picture says it all. 20 Naval personnel of which 19 are HiSo officers and one poor crewman, presumably to do all the work!

Too many chiefs, screw the indians.

Looks pretty good,  I notice Frigates are getting smaller these days.........................................:coffee1:

Royal Navy "River" Class frigate (WW2) length 301ft

RN "Leander" Class (1960's) 372ft

RN Type 21 (1970's) 384ft

RN Type 23 (1980's and current) 436ft

RTN Tha Chine (2017) 444ft

Though the Tha Chine is longer it displaces less than the Type 23.

Any idea why?

PS The next RN (Type 26, 2020's) will be 492ft x 68ft, HUGE.

OK, I'm a vocabulary Nazi, but a frigate is not a "battleship;" frigates and battleships are different kinds of warships. Battleships have been obsolete for a long time and there aren't any more out there as far as I know.

500 million USD, a second one may be built in Thailand? The RTN seems flush with cash. Believe the sub order has also been placed.

I guess this counts as "infrastructure" and somehow will stimulate the economy?

Maybe they can use it as a temporary shelter for some of those poor ba$tards in the south who have more or less been left to it, as there is seemingly nothing in the state coffers for disaster management.

Extensive use of bamboo.
You see it doesn't show up on radar (very stealthy), and it floats.

The system is therefore not only ideal for hunting submarines but also for the wide-area reconnaissance of surface combatants.

Know we know, it is designed to find their submarines when they go missing

Must be the only navy ship crew anywhere in the world that has a ship's compliment of 18 officers and 1 rating.

I expect the officers will fly back to Thailand.

Wonder if Korean naval command and ship personnel will deliver the ship to Thailand if purchased FOB and train Thai navy as part of purchase package.

Junta approves controversial plan to spend billions on submarine

Amid widespread public opposition, the Thai junta has given a green light to a controversial plan to spend billions of baht on a Chinese submarine.

On 24 January 2017, ADM Chumphon Lumpikanon, spokesman of the Royal Thai Navy (RTN), announced that the government of Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha, the junta leader and Prime Minister, has approved the purchase of a submarine from China. The 13.5 billion baht purchase has also been cleared by the junta-appointed National Legislative Assembly.

The submarine model ‘Yuan Class S26T’ is expected to be delivered to the country from China in six years time.

Astonishing, 13.5 billion for a submarine, yet Tops supermarket was appealing over new year for donations towards the cost of providing body armour to the troops serving in the south!

Says it all, really, doesn't it? Insufficient body armour and golf ball detectors to protect somebody's beloved son / husband / dad, but plenty of cash around for hardware which will never be of any real use. It is a shameful state of affairs.
