Police in Roi-Et are hunting a callous woman who stole a gold bracelet from the wrist of an 89 year old grandmother while she was lying helpless in bed.

The incident happened Friday at a row of terrace houses in Nai Muang sub-district where Noo Yamsopha lives with her younger sister and her son.

The family were preparing food for the curry shop they have out front but Noo was ill in bed. A female customer aged about 40-45 came to the shop and was asked to wait in the house for some food she ordered.

All of a sudden the woman who was left alone with the grandmother grabbed a two baht weight gold bracelet from her arm and left quickly.

Noo said she was powerless to do anything and by the time she managed to cry out the thief had disappeared.

Police are studying the CCTV in the area to try and find the thief.

Most thieves have no scruples.

A bit strange though to let an unknown customer wait in your house unattended.

Agreed - but a despicable act nonetheless particularly given the circumstances of a defenceless old lady.

Years ago in the old shipyard and  mining communities near to where I am from the front doors were always open. People and visitors would give a polite knock and walk in. These days the front doors are locked and bolted.

I hope the same doesn't happen here where the goodwill of Thai householders, and the frequent offers to known passers by to "Come and eat" is exploited to the effect that they too resort to the locked doors on their homes - something alien to current village Thai society and one thing I would hate to see.

Granted the OP is a shop but the Thai hospitality principles still apply.

Clearly some people are shameless.

Probably learned their morals from the cops and Government Officials.
