Local news reports talk of cracks in the earth and in buildings in Mae Rim-Mae Joe area.

More earthquakes to come

The Meteorological Department is warning Chiang Mai more earthquakes could follow this morning's moderate shake.

Director of the department's Chiang Mai office Suparerk Tansrirattanawong said 69 aftershocks had been recorded.

"It has sent a signal that more earthquakes may hit Mae Rim and San Sai districts," Suparerk said.

This morning's earthquake measured 5.1 on the Richter scale and occurred immediately after midnight. Its epicentre was in Mae Rim district. The earthquake was about 33 kilometres deep.

"It's the first time an earthquake has occurred so close to the Chiang Mai city," Suparerk added.

The impact was felt by many.

Mae Jo University students evacuated dormitories and engineers continue to search for structural damage.

Lotus Hotel Pang Suan Kaew staff said the earthquake panicked guests for a short time. Other hotels reported calm.

Mineral Resources Department directorgeneral Apichai Chawacharoenphan warned residents not to panic. "Panic often leads to injuries during an evacuation," he said.

The earthquake was one of the strongest recorded in Chiang Mai. The largest was 5.2 on the Richter scale in December 1995.

Apichai said while Wednesday's earthquake proper was not alarming the number of aftershocks was "unusually high".

"Department officials will look into this and work with other authorities," he added.

Department information will be passed to the Public Works and Royal Irrigation Departments.

Regulations in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Lamphun, Lampang, Mae Hong Son, Tak, Nan, Phrae and Kanchanaburi require buildings to be able to withเธŒstand earthquakes.

"The Public Works Department is seeking to enforce similar rules in Bangkok and its four adjacent provinces," Apichai said.

National Disaster Warning Centre chief Smith Dharmmasaroj said Thailand was home to nine active faults. Earthquakes along some could affect Bangkok.

We are in an earthquake zone here in Chiang Mai, although the ones we have had recently, have tended not to be serious. I have experienced at least a dozen over the years, three of which have caused minor structural damage.

The big one is unlikely, but may occur. So I hope the following might save some lives.

It is translated into Thai for you to show spouses and others whose English may not be up to the mark.

In 1996 we made a film, which proved my survival methodology to be correct. We collapsed a school and a home with 20 mannequins inside. Ten mannequins did "duck and cover," and the other ten mannequins used my "triangle of life" survival method. After the simulated earthquake, we crawled through the rubble and entered the building to film and document the results. The film showed that there would have been zero percent survival for those doing duck and cover; and 100 percent survivability for people using my method of the "triangle of life."

At that time, the children were told to hide under something. Simply stated, when buildings collapse, the weight of the ceilings falling upon the objects or furniture inside crushes these objects, leaving a space or void next to them. This space is what I call the "triangle of life". The larger the object, the stronger, the less it will compact. The less the object compacts, the larger the void, the greater the probability that the person who is using this void for safety will not be injured.

If the wooden building does collapse, large survival voids are created. Also, the wooden building has less concentrated, crushing weight. Brick buildings will break into individual bricks. Bricks will cause many injuries but less squashed bodies than concrete slabs.

7) Never go to the stairs. The stairs have a different "moment of frequency" (they swing separately from the main part of the building). The stairs and remainder of the building continuously bump into each other until structural failure of the stairs takes place. The people who get on stairs before they fail are chopped up by the stair treads - horribly mutilated. Even if the building doesn't collapse, stay away from the stairs. The stairs are a likely part of the building to be damaged. Even if the earthquake does not collapse the stairs, they may collapse later when overloaded by fleeing people. They should always be checked for safety, even when the rest of the building is not damaged.

The victims of the San Francisco earthquake all stayed inside of their vehicles. They were all killed. They could have easily survived by getting out and sitting or lying next to their vehicles. Everyone killed would have survived if they had been able to get out of their cars and sit or lie next to them. All the crushed cars had voids 3 feet high next to them, except for the cars that had columns fall directly across them.

I was intending to pass this advice on when I came across this site which questions the above advice http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/household/triangle.asp I then looked at the Federal Emergency management Agency site http://www.fema.gov/hazard/earthquake/eq_during.shtm and it also gives contradictory advice to the above post.

I'm no expert so have no idea which is right or wrong but since it involves personal safety I thought I ought to post it so people have the information.

Must not be any Californians in this forum. Yesterdays earthquake was about the weakest I've ever experienced that could still be "felt". It was nothing but a good opportunity to remind people of actions to take during an earthquake. Stay away from windows, keep a flashlight next to your bed, go outside (wear shoes), do not stand next to building.

Maybe it depends on where you were or what you were doing at the time.

I lived in San Francisco for 15 years and was in the Big One of 89. That was a fair sized quake. :o

Yeah, that one cracked my pool, 450 miles away. Anyway, I don't think most of the "Earthquake Preparedness" stuff you read applies in this region. Staying inside is a bad idea here. I've been in half a dozen quakes that did minimal damge to California constructed homes, but would have leveled my house here. I think the best thing is just to get away from anything likely to crush you, and electrical wires too.

I'm from Alameda near San Francisco and went through the 89 quake also. I live near Kad Suan Kaew and didn't even notice the little thing. How do you tell the difference between a 4.5 and a truck driving by anyway?
