"Outdated" Thai police getting new guns to keep up with the bad guys

BANGKOK: -- The Thai police are to get new guns so that they can compete with criminals.

Thai News Agency reported that it has been almost 70 years since the last upgrade, reported Thai News Agency.

They have been using the familiar revolver six shot ever since. Now they hope to look more CSI than RTP.

They are to get a new .38 that will be much more reliable. The slick black handgun is capable of delivering 15 rapid action shots.

Spokesman Dechnarong of the national force told reporters they might have seen the weapons on CSI.

The move is part of the "Smart Police" initiative designed to drag the force into the modern era.

Improved radio communications and bullet proof jackets are other equipment that the force hopes will level up the playing field with the bad guys.

What happened to 150 000  Sigs that they were getting not long ago  that was approved by the ministry and signed off on by Mr. P which we're even going for a cheap price and even subsidies available for those that couldn't afford them. Or was that another one of those rorts that never happened and of which we can not speak. Or maybe that all got sold off through other channels?

What is it that's said about a bad workman blaming his tools again?

Criminals who use weapons more often than not use them to compensate for their other gross inadequacies (notably brain power).

So surely training to make a smarter police force would be a wiser idea.

The only thing i see happening here is more collateral damage from when the cop sprays 15 bullets to blow the car tyres out rather than the standard 6 ill directed shots.

What a $#it show ?

I thought that they had bought a load of new automatic pistols last year - wasn't the deal pushed through by the previous police head honcho?

They definitely were on order 150000 Sig pistols.

Yes, good news and just think Duangchalerm son of the Thai politician  Chalerm Yubamrung, who, as head firearms instructor at the Thai Royal Police Academy,  is going to train these policemen to use their new toy (once they figure out which ammunition to use since the US Glock Website states that the Glock 17 is 9mm only)

He has plenty of experience since he beat the rap for shooting a RTP undercover officers in a bar fight in Nov of 2001.  He escaped to Malaysia and eventually returned and was acquitted after all the witnesses suffered significant memory losses

Even was promoted since the Army did not feel his stay in Malaysia constituted desertion and was "laterally" transferred to the RTP

And people wonder Who's your daddy

If you still worked in imperial measurements then 3/8" or .38 are pretty much 9mm I suppose, although you'd have fun trying to stick a 38 into a 9mm.

Just guessing why the discrepancy.

Our local cops have got a variety of side arms, including the Glocks (Minburi).

Hope they aren't like the Philippines where the cash strapped police cannot afford to buy bullets so the guys never actually get to shoot their guns!

Hand guns are not so much a threat to the bad guys, more a show piece showing that the bib have equal firepower.  Issue a few 12 gauge shotguns with buckshot and slug loads and you only need to let the bad guys know what they can expect if they even act like they want a fire fight.

Shooting at tires with a handgun, to stop a criminal does not reflect very well on the bib training nor mindset, unless of course, it may be some of their own, they are after. Fire for affect son, not show.

Let's not forget that a Thai policeman has to buy and pay for his own sidearm,

if he can't afford the expensive one, he's stuck with the six shooter....

Is that true? That's a bit off but explains why a police acquaintance offered to sell my SIL a couple of guns, one a revolver and the other a semi-auto, price £40,000 for one with all the paperwork and less for the other with no paperwork.

You can put 38 bullets in some 9mm guns, but probably only revolvers.

They do have long guns as well.

£40000? Surely you mean baht. Without saying too much let me assure you can pick a gun up of a copper here for 30- 50 k baht all day. I also doubt the paperwork would have been correct cos to my knowledge there is no provisio  in the law to allow transfer of gun ownership to another person in Thailand except down through immediate family.

Yes, because it's the guns that will transform them from a  bunch of inept, corrupt, lazy #$@#^&%$ into an efficent law enforcement body {albeit a mythical one taken from tv} rather than proper training.

No you can't. Beside the fact that the 9mm is actually two thousandths of an inch smaller in diameter, than the .38 ( actually .357 vs. .355") the length and profile of the two cartridges differs substantially. While the .38 is traditionally a revolver cartridge there are a few semi-auto pistols that come in a .38 version, of which the Glock 17 is not one.

Just what Thailand needs more guns, before they hand them out

maybe they should do balsic tests and record results for each gun,

might come in handy in proving who shot who in the future.

and what do you think will happen to all the old guns.
