The Excise Department is prepared to explain to manufacturers as well as the general public on the new sugar tax law that will cap tax on sweetened beverage at 20%.

The sugar tax law, which is pending publication in the Royal Gazette after winning National Legislative Assembly approval, will come into effect 180 days after publication.

Somchai Poolsavasdi, the director-general of the Excise Department, said the new law will increase excise tax for beverages with high sugar content.

The department plans to clarify to the public that soft-drink with high sugar content will be subjected to higher taxes so that consumers and ma manufacturers understand the necessity of the increase.

He said public seminars will be organized and both consumers and factories will be invited to join so that all the details of the new requirement can be explained to them.

"It's bad for you

Thank you for attending this seminar."

Ye Gods, why is it that these bozos in governments never do any research into the things they legislate for. Sugar taxes have already been tried in other countries, and have singularly failed to have any impact on either obesity rates or soft drink consumption.

Of course, the single-issue groups who lobbied for the higher taxes have massaged and cherry picked the figures and declared their pet hobby horse to be a great success (where have we seen this before...?), but the hard facts lend the lie to their claims.

But politicians, as gullible as ever, only listen to he who shouts loudest.

“…priority for the government is to ensure the general health of the public.

That's why there is no effective enforcement of traffic/driving safety  statutes, no smoking areas, underage drinking, on and on and on.

The priority for the government appears to be the balancing of their budget as a result of their inadequate fiscal policies, inability to produce products that are desired by the international market, stem corruption that is bleeding the country dry, among others.

Given Thailand's type-2 diabetes epidemic, this tax is overdue, and some of the proceeds should be directed towards educating consumers about their long-term health.

Manufacturers should also be looking to reduce their use of sugar, and launch zero-sugar variants, of popular still/fizzy-drinks.

If the sugar-cane lobby will permit it  ...

The health issues are probably a disguise. This Government is not exactly flush with money and an additional source of taxation is most welcome.

Well the zero sugar drinks generally have artificial sweeteners added. I think I would sooner have the sugar.

Cut back on white rice, glysemic index very high, 80% turns to sugar in the blood, promote brown rice.

There are no totaly safe sugar substitutes out there.

Maybe add your own ingredients? Not sure what though..actually I add chili sauce to spice it up and mash into boiled eggs , I'm used to it now and won't pay silly price for imports

I'd be grateful just to have a choice !

I totally agree with this tax because I am a green tea lover and totally despise all this Oishi crap filled with sugar. Green tea is very healthy if not laced with sugar, but the healthy ones (like fuji) is often very hard to find in 7/11 etc.
Lets not even start about the soft drinks (EST anyone?)

Its good initiative.biggest problem is with all these sugary softdrinks.brown rice would be great if more restaurants would give this as an option.

I bring my own. Works fine.

Now that's not a silly idea. What's your recipe?

Depends with what im gonna eat it. All mayos are virtually the same as far as making is concerned. Oil, yellow from eggs, a little water, or lemon juice, or mustard. Pepper. Salt. But u can add chopped chilly or garlic or herbs etc. And use a little olive oil for sharpness. It takes 4 minutes and you make just enough for no more than 1 week and keep in fridge. After that u must make new. By making your own mayo u also realise how much oil it actally is. So u watch out not eating ever day. You can make it very fast with a mixer. But i do it by hand. Oldskool. If it shifts or gets too thick, 2 common problems, the solutions are simple and probably even shown on youtube. ?

Will this not also tax the 3-in-1 instant coffee's ? They have a tremedous amount of sugar in them, same with ice cream. Hope corn syrup is considered sugar.

If you have a hand blender, see att, try getting a tall glass put your egg yolks in and gently pour the oil on top. Put the blender in down to the bottom and start it. Raising it at the right speed is the trick to learn and it makes perfect mayo very quickly. The glass should be only a little bit wider than the blender.
