I shop at Big C extra on a daily base, and for the past 2 months they claim to have run out of 25 and 50 satang coins, however virtually every item in their store has a price label ending on .25 or .50.

When the "shortage" started they had a printed sign at check out counters announcing it, but lately they don't bother any more.

I can understand that this "inconvenience" can happen to any major store, but 2 months is a bit over the top in my opinion.

Now to avoid being slagged off by the TVF keyboard warriors, which are laying in the woods for such an opportunity, I'm not gonna make any claims just ask your opinion.

If my bill is 884.25 Baht is, as it was today, and I hand over 1000 Baht what change should I receive taken in account that they have no 25 or 50 Satang coins any more.

I know how they calculated their change in case of a total bill ending on .25, which is almost every day given their prices are marked in such a way, I only want to know what you think is the correct way.

I realise that we are talking about 25 and 50 satang, which has the same value for both parties involved.

I would not worry about it,much bigger things to worry about,

i have had shopkeepers give me a sweet if they dont have 25 or 50

satang coins, things must be getting quite bad for you if you have

worry about them,I do worry if I hand over a 1000 THB note, that

I get my correct change.

As it is their fault that they can't provide your 15.75 Baht change, you should receive 16 Baht. I'm guessing that you were given only 15 Baht.

I'm sure there is a genuine shortage of those tiny coins. They must cost more to produce than they are worth.

Did I say that I worry about 25 or 50 satang?

You noticed that I wrote in the OP that I didn't make a statement to avoid ASSumptions from the keyboard warriors.

But as you claim, I indeed worry that I get my CORRECT change.

Your guess is right, and as I say that I shop there on a daily basis, this happens almost every day for the past 2 months.

It is only 25, 50 or 75 Satang, which will not make me poorer, but it is the same value for them and at the end of the day I have already given them my business so they have earned already on it.

YOU are the only one making a BIG fuss of it, I only started a thread in which I asked for an opinion, nothing more.

When you go shopping take a few Satang coins with you.

Big C are being rather naughty at best if they are rounding down their change. However if they are rounding it up the OP is on a winner and should shop there every day ( oh look, he does go everyday). How long will it take the OP to save up his extra satangs to buy a big bottle of Leo, or would everyone following the thread lose the will to live first?

I have made clear repeatedly already that I don't get poorer of that 75 satang, even if it happens every day, I only posted my observations and that I don't consider it proper etiquette for a business like a supermarket.

I also realise that 75 satang is nothing to you, as it is to me or Big C, so would you mind to send me 75 satang every day?

I suggest you put it only in my account once every 2 months, as to save you the hassle of running to the bank every day, and if each TVF member who considers 75 satang not worth talking about does this then I'm gonna be a very happy chappie.

Nah OP has a point if they are rounding down and he is losing out. Love those little coins. Go straight into the pringles tub and adds up nicely. Makes a great tablet stand too btw.

Nobody worries about 50 satang, and neither do I, if I drop 50 satang by mistake I won't even bend over to pick it up, but it is my freedom to decide if I give someone 50 satang or not.

Though the correct business etiquette would be that either the shopkeeper adjust the total to the benefit of the customer who has made him already a profit of much more than a few satang, or adjust his price tags so that there isn't any need for satang coins at the check out.

I aslo didn't mention Makro, Tesco or Rimping in my OP, and definitely not any store in Chiang Mai for those who haven't figured out yet that this is the PATTAYA forum.

I have quite a few of them..if they are in short supply why dont the supermarkets do a way with them and just use 1 baht increments ?

I've never noticed any shortage and wouldn't care if there is; the fewer the coins the better. However, sometimes when I've only got one hand free, I'll dig into my pocket for change and pull out a big wad, including lots of satang coins, and tell the cashier to get what's needed. It's surprising then how many cashiers will offer to change as many of them as possible for bills--as if there is a shortage.

Shortage of 50 and 25 sataang is everywhere, at Max value they had a sign that they'll give sweets in lieu of the change, Foodland had a sign that they'll happily count and change your piggy bank, most shops would just round up in favour of the customer

Maybe connected with the mint bringing in a new design for the new reign?

And that is just the point of my thread, however I agree that satangs is silly money, it better comes from a mountain than from a molehill.

The owner of Big C is one of the richest people in Thailand, may be not rich enough in his eyes?

Now this is news, that Big C is owned by one person. Who is that exactly?

It is only 25, 50 or 75 Satang

If they do that for every customer in every store it adds up to thousands of baht per day.

It is definitely no news that you use every opportunity to show your assumed superiority by making some hair splitting posts, isn't that called trolling by the way,  but my understanding is that most who know you don't take your posts at any value.

To answer your question

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_C

Groupe Casino SA agreed in February 2016 to sell its stake in Thai hypermarket operator Big C for €3.1 billion (US$3.46 billion) to Thai billionaire, Mr Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi. His holding company, TCC Group, will buy Casino's 58.6 percent stake in Big C Thailand for 252.88 baht a share (US$7.10), a price that values Big C close to US$5.86 billion.

Pay by Credit Card - problem solved.

Did you realise that most foreigners in Thailand are unable to get a Thai credit card, unless they freeze a significant sum of money with the bank, and why would anyone pay an extra credit card cost to shop for groceries?

I agree it's not necessarily easy for a Foreigner to get a Credit Card in Thailand, depending on the Bank etc., but it's definitely not impossible, you just need to shop around.

Plus, who pays "extra" to use a Credit Card to shop for groceries?! I use my AMEX and Visa Cards several times a month at Tesco and Villa etc. and have never been charged a Fee by them, it's a cost the Vendor bears.

If you use your foreign credit card your card company or bank will charge a fee on top of the exchange rate.

At least my Master card does.

Somewhat related, I've noticed more shops refused to accept satang coins, including FoodMart.  The pharmacy inside Tesco in South Pattaya (Sukhumvit) also refuses.  But, they apparently do round down the 25 satang totals, and round-up 50-or-more satang.  It baffles me why they even price items in satang increments if they don't accept satang coins.

Well, but now you've gone and affirmed the value of my post by agreeing with it, as you must, which, BTW, completely refutes your silly "point." Good news is now that you know Big C is a public corporation then if you really think the satang biz is making significant money you can cash in by buying shares for yourself.

It's emerging that the issue isn't that Big C shareholders don't have enough money but merely that you don't.

Not significant at all, unless you really are a pig needing to buy so many groceries at Big C. Can be counted part of the 800K anyway. Besides, a debit card can be used as well.

This may come as a surprise but most cardholders can figure out that the credit card could be used for purchases other than just groceries. If you're having trouble with that, a Thai partner will be of immense help.
