Erdogan says Turks in Europe should defy 'grandchildren of Nazism'

ANKARA (Reuters) - President Tayyip Erdogan on Monday called on Turkish voters in Europe to defy the "grandchildren of Nazism" and back a referendum this month on changing the constitution, comments likely to cause further ire in Europe.

Erdogan has repeatedly lashed out at European countries, including Germany and the Netherlands, in campaigning for the referendum, accusing them of "Nazi-like" tactics for banning his ministers from speaking to rallies of Turkish voters abroad.

Both the Germans and Dutch have been incensed by the comparisons to Nazism and German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said the references must stop.

"With this determination, we will never allow three or four European fascists ... from harming this country's honour and pride," Erdogan told a packed crowd of flag-waving supporters in the Black Sea city of Rize, where his family comes from.

"I call on my brothers and sisters voting in Europe...give the appropriate answer to those imposing this fascist oppression and the grandchildren of Nazism."

Erdogan is counting on the support of expatriates in Europe, including the 1.4 million Turks eligible to vote in Germany, to pass constitutional changes that would give him sweeping presidential powers.

But ties with Europe have deteriorated in the run-up to the campaign. Erdogan last month said Turkey would reevaluate its relationship with the bloc, and may even hold a second referendum on whether to continue accession talks.

On Monday, he said he could take the issue of whether Turkey should restore the death penalty to referendum if necessary.

"The European Union will not like this. But I don't care what Hans, George or Helga say, I care what Hasan, Ahmet, Mehmet, Ayse and Fatma say. I care what God says... If necessary, we will take this issue to another referendum as well," he told the rally.

Turkey abandoned capital punishment more than a decade ago as part of its bid to join the European Union, but Erdogan has repeatedly told crowds calling for it following the July 15 failed coup that he would approve its restoration if parliament passed it.

Restoring capital punishment would all but end Turkey's bid to join the EU, officials from the bloc have said.

Go 'tend' your goats, Sultan ...

goat tending by muslim guys versus children raping in churches by christian priests? i think church rapes and abuses win!

Erdogan is as fascist as his European and US counterparts in my opinion.

hope he got a 'no' from the referendum and go to hell forever! Turkey sure will be a lot better place without him.

and Europeans hypocrites?

better they go hell too!

they talk about freedom of speech and ban some guys from turkey to enter Europe who will do a simple speech. (actually they did good but then you have no chance to speak like you believe or support freedom of speech)

and they say freedom of religion and go bow their heads in front of Pope! so they say Europe is actually a Christian club. This happened recently.

Yeah, well, if you wait for me to defend any so called 'religion' against anything you'll see hell freezing over first.

And if sovereign countries like Germany, Netherlands or Austria tell any foreign politician to just get funkin' lost instead of letting them soil their, well, soil with some more hatred stump-speeches then that's up to them only, their good right & perfectly fine - and will hopefully be continued just that way ...

I would love Merkl to respond with a call for Germans and Europeans working on high level infrastructure projects in Turkey to

Quote

defy the "grandchildren of Nazism" the Ottoman Empire responsible for the Armenian Genocide". That would rattle Erdogans cage more than a little.

Maybe Geert Wilders is the man for such a speech.

Just think, if it were not for some Intel people in the USA with a conscience we might have Gen Flynn backing this call from Erdogan now in his capacity as NSA!!  I think the leakers should be given the Congressional Medal of Honour.

same sovereign countries have no problems when kurds do their hate speech towards turks?

same hatred stump-speeches with your words.

moreover, i support some european leaders for not allowing turkish ministers there but it backfired and made a big issue in turkey and used as a good tool by Erdogan's team!

it counted as unfairness and many voters now go vote for bigot Erdogan bc of this stupidity especially the ones in Europe!

so hypocrite European leaders did this in a wrong way and this might result on Erdogan to win elections. Better europeans dont put their noses into other countries bc clearly they have no grasp on this!

Nothing of that kind (stump-speeches) from Kurds in AT or DE, as usual you're misinformed to say the least.

Furthermore your twisted perception of 'free speech' as well as 'hypocrisy' are legend on here & you can just shove it all.

Erdogan - the Turkish Nazi - didn't get and certainly doesn't need any 'help' from EU to funk up his country, again your skewed vision here, idiocy out of season, nothing new again.

In your words: some 'people' better don't put their noses into EU politics which they clearly have no grasp on - again.

As replies to your hyped-up bs rants are purely waste of time & online-space i'm OUT.

I'd heard that previously (a couple of decades ago), but was more recently told by a German friend that this was never the case.

Back on topic - look on the bright side, Erdogan's statements make it clear that he's given up on Turkey becoming part of the EU.

sorry, you have no idea and just bc hypocrites like you in Europe, bigot erdogan will make Turks suffer more!

I suspected this was the case as it was my ex husband who took a holiday in Germany (a couple of decades ago?) to visit some 'ham radio' friends - and whilst being shown around asked about an un-inviting compound they passed.  He was told it was for "guest workers"....

He was horrified.

are you deliberately lying or just so ignorant that you dont know how to google? or do you fear from facts to google?

'Swiss prosecutors are investigating whether a protest sign calling for the killing of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan violated laws against inciting violence, police said on Monday.

People demonstrating in Bern on Saturday against plans to extend Erdogan's powers held up a sign reading "Kill Erdogan with his own weapons" and pictured a pistol aimed at his head.'

Those Kurds are in Germany legally and are subject to German law. Anything illegal they do will be dealt with by Germany. It is no different than Arabs having  rallies in London denouncing the UK or USA or Israel and calling for their death. They can do it  because they have the legal right.

Mr. Erdogan wished to send his  agents, his foreign officials into another country and campaign for a political activity.

These are not the same types of activities. One is legal residents and the other is foreign agents.

Now, do  you believe Erdogan would allow German government agents  into Turkey to  work on behalf of the Kurdish Workers Party, or to campaign on behalf of basic human rights or the restoration of free speech or habeas corpus?

You are seriously confused  and are making a fool of yourself.

Well, kid, very well put.

I see you've got much more patience in dealing with the Confused Free-Speech Knight than myself, rrrespect.

Btw. the only thing really wrong with that pic is that it's content isn't a factual headline already ...

you are the one making fool of yourself i believe.

turks there also legal citizens and they have right to meet with anyone from abroad. this is their legal right as much as kurds.

so those kurds dont invite anyone from abroad?? most comes from other parts of europe or kurdish areas or old terrorists accepted as immigrants.

german agents that might work for kurdish party in turkey is not same thing too! what a comparison!

and what about the hate filled poster that is investigated by officials there for 'inciting violence? sure laws go behind those guys placing the poster to a government building? what about the guys allowing that poster and hare speeches there? will they be jailed or fined? sorry but dont think so.

do i support holland and germany for not accepting turkish officials? yes

but this did more harm than good for turks. again and again, erdogan and their fascists use these as populist tools to get more vote for the incoming referandum giving lots of power to bigot erdogan!

if you cant see this, you have no grasp of this situation apart from your erdogan hate which i totally agree and share your feelings.

holland and germany did this very wrong. they should invite those erdogan fascists, let them do their nonsense speech and leave. if they did this, erdogan might lose the referandum. but know? erdogan is using this double standard to get more votes.

well, hypocrites...they always think that they know better than everyone!
