Hello

My GF has a family memeber who's trade is building houses. Apparently he has an aquaintance in Oz who has invited him and 3 of his friends to come over to Oz to help build a Thai style house.

I suspect this is going to be a cash in hand job with no talk about taxes etc.

They all have Thai passports.

My GF is asking me what type of visa's they should be applying for and what the process woul be? I wouldn't have a clue as I'm in the UK. Can anyone offer me some advice?

This aquaintance is also offering to pay 30,000THB per person per month.....what do you think? They are experienced housebuilders in LOS.

Much appreciated...

This won't be easy to do. The Australian guy should contact Australian Immigration to establish the applicable rules. There is a bilateral working holiday deal between Australia and Thailand, but that has age limitations and requires applicants to have a university degree.

They would not qualify for any working visas, Therefore the only visas they could come over on is a 3 month tourist visa....I dont believe that this would easy for 3 of them to get. Also Oz has some very stringent building laws and codes.

It is illegal to work in Oz while on a tourist visa.

That is the most I can say on the subject.

Take note of everything said above.

There is a skills shortage in many parts of Au, so a suitably qualified sponsor can employ qualified foreign labour. This does come with the permission to work. Check with immi about this, there are some very stringent rules that go with this.

Remind your family that Baxter is a very unpleasant place if the paperwork is not done correctly.

I would advise extreme caution with this plan.

I do not believe that your friend can do this legally.

THB30,000 for 1 month, is a long way under the minimum wage for this type of work in Australia.

The government (and the Trade Unions) would have a field day under migrant exploitation laws if they found out about this.

On a tourist Visa, you cannot do any work, paid, unpaid, volunteer work ect.

My Thai GF (in australia) cannot sit in the kitchen of her friends restaraunt and talk (as they like to do), as this could be considered working.

I do understand how a thai builder at THB30,000 per month is an attractive option, but your friend will need to make sure that they comply with all of the laws and qualifications for a builder.

This will also largely depend on which state in Australia your friend lives in.

Thanks for the replies guys... a lot to consider.

In summary it seems yes, they may be able to come in on a working visa if they are suitably qualified and can work to strict Australian building reglations.

If they are not and can not they may be able to come in on a toursit visa, but (probably will not get thru normal immigrations/ visa checks), run the risks associated with working illegally, work for a sum of money considered to be well below the Australian average and the owner potentially may have his lovely new Thai style house pulled down as it doesn't meet Australian regulations.

I think they may be stayng at home....

Cheers
