Gang arrested for allegedly stealing phones from Songkran revellers
By The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Police arrested three Cambodians and a Thai woman for allegedly collaborating to steal smartphones from Songkran revellers at three major celebration spots in Bangkok.

Police found 27 smartphones, including iPhone and Samsung handsets, identification cards, ATM cards, driving licences and vehicle keys on the suspects.

The four suspects were arrested at a rented room in Pathum Thani’s Thanyaburi district at about 10.30am on Tuesday.

They are Sokna Son, 29, a Cambodian man, Rin Darin, 29, a Cambodian woman, Mab Kim, 22, a Cambodian man, and Sukanya Khamlue, 24, a Thai woman.

Metropolitan Police chief Lt-General Sanit Mahathavorn said police conducted an investigation that led to the arrests after victims filed complaints that their smartphone, contained in waterproof cases hanging on their necks, had been stolen.

Those victims said their phones were cut from their necks while they splashed water at the RCA area.

Sanit alleged a Cambodian man, identified only as Moke, cut the cases from necks and palmed them off to his accomplices.

Moke has not been arrested.

Sanit said the offences were committed on April 13, 14 and 15.

Sanit said Mab and Sukanya, who are married, had been charged with accepting stolen items to sell them.
