WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said on Sunday he expected Mexico to pay for the wall he has promised to build along the southern border, resuscitating a campaign promise that roiled U.S. relations with Mexico in the first week of his presidency.

"Eventually, but at a later date so we can get started early, Mexico will be paying, in some form, for the badly needed border wall," Trump said in a Twitter post.

Trump returned to his Mexico demand on a morning in which he simultaneously tried to pressure congressional Democrats to include funding for the border wall in must-pass spending legislation needed to keep the U.S. government open beyond Friday.

In Mexico City, a spokesman for the foreign ministry had no immediate comment on Trump's wall payment comment.

The Republican president's demand that Mexico pay for the border wall triggered a diplomatic crisis with the southern U.S. neighbor during the first week of his presidency. Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto on Jan. 26 scrapped a planned trip to meet with Trump and the White House floated the idea of a 20 percent tax on goods from Mexico to pay for the wall.

The two leaders agreed the following day not to talk publicly about payment for the wall, the Mexican government said. The White House said the two recognized they had differences over the proposed wall but agreed to "work these differences out."

Trump sought the wall, projected to cost more than $20 billion, as part of his effort to curb illegal immigration. Mexico has rejected payment for the construction project as out of the question.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions told ABC's "This Week" on Sunday the wall would get paid for one way or another.

"I don't expect the Mexican government to appropriate money for it but there are ways that we can deal with our trade situation to create the revenue to pay for it, no doubt about it," Sessions said.

I don't know why he feels the need to tweet such rubbish. Mexico won't pay for it and any taxes or duties, will simply mean the US consumer will be paying it through higher end product prices. The reality is if Donald wants a wall, America will be paying for it.

Why don't Americans start a mob like those done in Thailand by the Yellow-Shirts comprising mainly of the Thai-Chinese, The Democrats and The Southern Thais that overthrew a democratically-elected government and have  a Military Rule established. Maybe thats the only way to get rid of Trump.  I am sure that in America , there are a lot of poor , uneducated, white trash that should not have the right to vote as they make wrong choices.

You got it right.

T is for Trump and Thaksin

 D is for Democrats

Trump like the other T is trying to do what must be done for the people of  his country.. His opponents who only care about themselves . Their power, their money, their entitlement. And at the same time say Trump is the bad boy.

Trump is fighting the established powers. Much the same as the north fighting the south to get rid of slavery. or the common man of Thailand fighting the elite. Not an easy task when the opponents have every thing at their finger tips to make it difficult for him.

Thailand uses coups, America uses impeachment. I just hope he stands tall and wins for the sake of America and the free world.

Trump has the senate, the house, the presidency and effectively controls the media (unless you agree, its all fake). There is no-one left to fight or blame.

I'd be very curious to know exactly what it is you think that he has accomplished for "the people". All of the jobs he claims to have saved were due to agreements that were in the pipeline long before he got elected, as all of the companies involved have been quick to point out. His healthcare bill went down in flames due to the refusal of those in his own party to support it (which is a good thing, because it would have eliminated health insurance for 24 million in the next ten years). His unconstitutional ban on Muslims has been upheld by even conservative appellate courts. He said he's not going to go after Hillary, despite his "red meat" promise to do so. Instead of draining the swamp, he has populated it with billionaire oligarchs who are out to line their own pockets. Brilliant move. He promises to change a system that favors billionaires by putting billionaires in charge and ordering them to change the system that made them billionaires. Sounds legit. He tells the President of Italy that Pavarotti is a "great friend", even though the Italian tenor died ten years ago. He wants to get rid of the Export/Import bank...until a billionaire explains to him what it is and how it benefits American products. He leaves the US open to diplomatic disasters by firing all Obama ambassadors and refusing to appoint replacements. He's antagonizing the unhinged leader of a third-rate nuclear power who is itching for war with America. He says he's going to cut taxes on the wealthy and big business (and, oh yeah, you folks in the middle class might save a hundred bucks or so) while at the same time upping defense spending, demanding billions for a useless wall, and promising to spend a trillion dollars on infrastructure (which would be a good thing were it not for that whole exploding the deficit thing). Should he succeed in that kind of increase in unfunded spending, the deficit will mushroom and the dollar will plummet...which just might affect the incomes of Americans living in Thailand.

You might want to take your head out of the glue bag and stop huffing so much.

okay okay okay...... the First 100 Days is not up yet.

when it is.... we won't "need" to hear... or "share" our feelings... about this really stupid idea.

we already have a wall, along the border, any where where it would do any good. just a guess. just a guess. and my "feelings" on this. thank you very much.

The US doesn't have a history of coups and unlike some other countries, our military reports to the elected leader. As much as I dislike Trump, I would never advocate such an action. Perhaps my wishful thinking but he will be removed via legal means or he will resign eventually.

According to Budget Director Mulvaney, cancer patients (in the U.S.) will pay for the wall, at least those who live.

I think most Americans do not see the need for this wall. Elderly, white males seem to be all for it, at least when their meds are working.

And what will it achieve, people will tunnel under it, fly over it etc. At the moment 60% of people arrive by plane and overstay.

Just in case others are not sure what you are saying . Dollar for dollar trade, for every one dollar for the wall, he will pay a dollar for insurance subsidies authorized by the Affordable Care Act but not funded.

Great guy, isn't he.

President Trump is apparently trying to add another item to his resume of bumbled hostage-taking efforts this week, by threatening to sabotage the Affordable Care Act unless Democrats vote to fund a border wall with Mexico

how will he get Mexico to eventually pay for the wall?

One approach that does not involve imports was Trump's idea of taxing remittances sent from the US to Mexico. However, that involves a number of constitutional issues sufficient to cause an immediate temporary restraining order by a circuit court.

Another approach that came out of congress is the border adjustment tax on Mexican goods. But its success is complicated, including an assumption that the US dollar would rise 20% in value as more manufacturing jobs are created in the US as a result of the tax. The US would also face lawsuits by WTO member nations and retaliation throughout the world on US imports. http://money.cnn.com/2017/02/27/news/economy/border-adjustment-tax-trump-trump-congress/

Mexico said it's willing to renegotiate NAFTA. Perhaps Trump could explore collaboration first before attempting authoritarian approaches to foreign trade relations.

A draft of Trump's proposed changes to Nafta was recently released. It was ludicrously weak compared to what Trump was demanding of Mexico during the campaign.

While weak the response not welcoming:

“I don’t think anyone really has a clue what’s really going to happen,” said Agustín Barrios Gómez, a former Mexican congressman and the president of the Mexico Image Foundation, which is dedicated to promoting Mexico’s reputation abroad. “There’s this entire optimism that the wolf isn’t going to blow the house down, but it could be toppled over in one tweet.”

That comment was reinforced by White House Spokesman Spicer who seemingly disavowed the document as a reflection of the administration’s objectives in the negotiation. “That is not a statement of administration policy,”

Trump doesn't know where he's going and his staff don't know how to get him there.

When Trump says/tweets such ridiculous things, he's picturing himself in a large arena with 17,000 rednecks cheering him hardily.  He's like the 70 year old former rock & roll band player who pictures himself at the height of his career, when he was 19 and playing with a popular band in a stadium.  He picks up the electric guitar and plays the same riff and he can almost hear the groupies squeal with delight.

You're too nice.  I wouldn't let them move back to NYC or FL.  They can move to a prison in Folsom California.  They've broken the law in several ways, not least:  laundering money.  If you or I had broken such laws, we'd be hauled up to court to face charges.  He can duck and lie twenty times per hour, but his karma is going to catch up with police dogma who will put his fat butt in prisona.
