Downpours cause traffic snarls in Bangkok
By The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Heavy rains early Friday caused flooding on several Bangkok streets, leading to traffic snarls around the capital. Road accidents were reported in many areas.

The flooded areas included Lat Phrao Road from the Soi Paowana intersection to the Chokchai 4 market. The water level was as high as the pavement.

A 500-metre section on Ratchadaphisek Road next to Ratchayothin near the Major intersection was inundated.

Traffic police reported that many roads in Bang Na, Huai Kwang, Lat Krabang and Klong Toey were also flooded, causing traffic gridlocks in the areas.

Police said the traffic was crawling on the inbound Phetchaburi Road from Soi Soon Wichai because the left lane was flooded.

The inbound Ratchapruek Road to Taling Chan saw two left lanes inundated and the local road from the underpass to the Borom Ratchonnanee elevated road was flooded.

The Muang Thong Thani-bound Tiwannon Road was flooded, causing traffic congestion in the area.

BANGKOK: -- Bangkok traffic turned choatic Friday during rush hours when several roads were partly submerged after summer rainstorms lashed the capital early in the morning.

Motorists and commuters were in trouble alike when their vehicles could not either move or inched very slowly as they set out to work early in the mirning.

The summer storm began to dump heavy rains in many areas of Bangkok at 5.00am, the time when office workers began to leave homes to work by public transportation.

And for those who drove their own cars, they also reported trouble when their vehicles could move slowly as their routine roads were submerged up to sidewalk levels.

Traffic police reported several roads that were submerged and inconvenient to travel.

They included Lard Prao, Ratchadapisek, Vibhavadi Rangsit, Phetburi, Ramkhamhaeng, Rama 9, Srinakarind in eastern and northern parts of Bangkok. In the southern part, the traffic situation was also the same with vehicles moving very slowly.

"Police said the traffic was crawling on the inbound Phetchaburi Road from Soi Soon Wichai because the left lane was flooded."

Being as so few cars use the left lane, how was that a problem?
