How much would this place cost if I go out looking while I'm there?

https://www.flipkey.com/lamai-beach-condo-rentals/p979068/

480 Baht a night minus the Flipkey fee would be something like 400 Baht a night. Monthly rates vary widely, in Pattaya often as low as 10 times the daily rate but in Samui often as high as 20-30 times the daily rate. I guess your guy would be happy with 6000-8000 a month.

I know in Chiang Mai you can just scooter from one building to the next and there'll be somebody at the building willing to rent to you immediately, does it work the same on Samui?

By the way, I contacted this Johnny guy from the ad on Airbnb last year. Seems like a decent guy. He seems to act like a translator to get lots of cheap Thai apartments to English speakers. Just contact him and he'll show you a few places. Also does motorbikes he says.

Thing I don't get is with a 35k budget a month and not going out all of the time then why scrimp on lodging?

I'm not planning on lodging bare minimum at all. I just thought he was offering something like non tourist price for a decent place.

Heavily depends on the time of the year but peak season is not too long so you shouldn't have a hard time finding something. I stayed for nearly 2 months around Christmas and 2 out of the 3 proper bungalows in my complex were empty except for the last week. Also never been turned away at any apartment or hotel, they all had rooms.

My goodness, it pays to know people doesn't it!!!

:partytime2: If you get me that for 1500 a month lool.

lol. That is a day mate

He is new here guys, please don't troll him. 1500 is ridiculous. Even a tin "room" in a slum is like 1000.

Edit: Okay, got it. This was my understanding as well.

Aye. Plenty around but KK said he wanted to live in a peaceful area.

I'd say just go and check it out. It is really not that big and a bit of exploring is half the fun, finding a gem the other half.

I actually contacted him on flipkey but he did not seem to be willing to offer anything other than the advertised price. I even stated that I'd be there for at least 3 months and was not interested in paying these extortionate tourist prices. Will see though, he kind put me off dealing with him.

That's a really good point you make about the age of the people who respond.

Ha, ha – and I'm 67 and prefer Chaweng at any time for it's discos and beach parties. For night-life, apart from the Saturday boxing event, Lamai sucks now; what once was – Fuzion Club and Super Sub – has (long) vanished. That's why I said, folk in their 20'ies probably would fancy Chaweng more than Lamai – however, we're all different.

And yes, traffic is little special (read: dangerous), so that's also a consideration about choosing a place to stay; depending of skills driving motorbike.

Both places has the Thai-style rooms for around 3,500 baht a month, even very centrally, that's where the Thais coming for work are staying. There's for example a big area behind the so-called "Soi Raggae", with that kind of rooms, including Thai-style kitchen and bathroom. Another spot is behind the "Lamdin Market". But you probably want some better standard...

When talking about bars, the major difference is that Lamai has more beer bars than Chaweng, whilst Chaweng has the trendy meting points for young folks (many of the older beer bars has closed, because it's a different clients coming now).

My best advise is: Don't decide before you are here – especially when you have never been to Samui before – check both places; and don't forget that there are (plenty of) other options than Chaweng and Lamai, if you don't need to get out every night. You can, as I mentioned before, find a temporary accommodation around 500 baht (or less) a night, for the first few days where you are looking around.

Hi, that's cool man, at your age you still know how to enjoy yourself! To be honest with you though I'm just not that big of a party animal anymore. You enjoy the clubs so for you it makes sense and Chaweng is probably even too laid back right. I'm not going for clubs and parties, but it's nice to have the option nonetheless. I'm sure they have beach parties on Lamai, or not?

Thanks for the advice, I am obviously going to spend the first 5 days or so in a hotel/ guesthouse and see which area I like most.

Would you mind telling me how much this place would go for monthly in the place you mentioned: https://www.flipkey.com/lamai-beach-condo-rentals/p979068/

You CAN get Thai prices as a farang without speaking Thai. That said, you wouldn't wanna stay there as you'd either be the only farang (potential target) or living with farangs without money who must likely have a drug or alcohol problem. Either way, it won't be nice. If you have a thousand dollars a month to spend, I guess 200-300$ a month for your room would be more than okay.

You might later regret having signed up for a room for three months (with 2 months deposit) and then realizing after a week that you might need things like a not rock-hard mattress made from coconut shells, actually working wifi, proper TV reception, cable TV, a balcony, good road access, some sort of security, a fridge (or one that's bigger than a shoe carton), aircon that doesn't smell of mold and maybe even some sort of swimming pool/gym or a communal area.

After all, it is a holiday and you shouldn't live like in a prison cell.

Whilst I fully agree with you I would also add that this kind of behaviour is unusual to many westerners. You have quite obviously been over here quite a while as have poorsucker and Jim. Some things are automatic or even axiomatic because it is everyday life. .

Have been here for a while but even I had to start going around with my bike asking places at some point. These weren't recommendations by farangs. It is just much cheaper. I paid 6000 Baht for my room in Phuket whilst my visiting friend was paying 21000 for the same kind of room in my apartment.

But I agree, lots of guys wanna have everything booked in advance and don't like surprises (especially Germans) but in my opinion this just takes the spice out of life.

I wouldn't care if I spend 500 or 2000 a night if only staying for two weeks, but if staying three months the difference between 10k and 60k a month is huge.

480 x 30 = 14,400 – you can probably get it for 12,000 baht a month, but ask the owner, he says you can contact him on the website, and get a right answer instead of a guess...

Lol I heard about the famous Thai mattresses. I can rent month to month no problem, right? Thin I'll be doing that with 1 month deposit because I might want to go to KP or KT too.

Yes

You've seen my place in the picture earlier and that's 35k for six months with free water and also drinking water. Government electricity [sic] is around 400 Baht a month

What I meant was, you talked about Thai places in your last post and that they can be had for 3500-5000 baht a month. I was just wondering if the standard of room is similar to the one I showed you?

I didn't mean to offend anyone... I was talking about places that go for under 4,500 a month.

In the cheap rooms the mattresses made from coconut are literally as hard as wood and you cannot sleep on them. I don't know what purpose they serve as you might as well sleep on the floor. Didn't know about the mattress the last time I checked into a place and had to buy some form of extra mattress in Lotus and even this wasn't enough. So check you mattress!

No. Bedroom with a small lounge and a shower at the rear. Behind that will be open and you have a place to cook if you have the means to.

Cool guys, can't wait to get over there. You guys have no idea! While some of you might have Samui problems, I envy you lot! I read somewhere that even a bad day in Samui is still better than good day in the UK. I thought that was quite interesting to read!
