SAMUI: -- A troubled Swiss man reported missing was found by Koh Samui farmers, swimming and laughing in a canal on top of Lamai Hill on Friday.

Rescue Volunteers found “Peter,” a 52-year-old foreigner, talking and laughing to himself while relaxing in the water. It took a while for them to talk the expat into boarding their truck back to the rescue center.

His Thai and foreign friends met him at the center, noting that Peter had mental problems and had been skipping his medication for over two months.

Serious "no s%€t" department. Read this and went to get my Prozac. Of the 14 medications I take, it is the one most often "forgotten". Fifty years of on and off treatment for depression, and I still "forget", even though it also helps with chronic pain from an extremely active younger life.

swiss nutter ....  should be sent back home before something more serious occurs  ...

There's a couple of concurrent threads running right now (there always is) about prepping financially for retirement/ living in Thailand- especially health care expenses and insurance.

When I read stories like this and others about expats who commit suicide, I can't help but wonder if its their health problems that get them in trouble, or the financial burden and inability to afford proper treatment without bankrupting the extended family.

It's not unusual for people with mental issues to get off their meds, and even more common when they can't afford them.

Just food for thought- as Bill Miller posted above.

Sounds like he was having the time of his life! I'm glad he's safe anyway - too many of these end badly.
