Suspects can smoke or apply makeup while in police custody: public prosecutor

BANGKOK: -- Criminal suspects have the right to smoke cigarettes or apply facial makeups while in police custody, but the Thai public in general are not familiar with such practice, said Mr Paramet Intharachumnum, a deputy director-general of the Attorney-General’s Office, on Monday.

Mr Paramet’s remark was in response of widespread criticism in the social media against the conduct of one of the three female suspects, Ms Preeyanut Nonewangchai, who was seen in newspapers and on TV with make-up face by the side of a policeman in Chiang Rai and the other suspects were seen smoking cigarettes.

Mr Paramet said that it was normal that police did not handcuff some suspects if they did not show any sign that they would escape while the other suspects were handcuffed.

By allowing some suspects to enjoy some rights while in police custody can help the suspects feel relaxed, he said.

Not sure what a clumsy procedures is that they still let the suspect in

a serious crime have their belonging with them no matter how harmless

they're,

has the belonging been thoroughly been examined and checked for substances

and sharp objects that they could harm themselves and others? I guess

not... why would such 3 sweet and pretty girls would want to harm any one right?....

Sir you are a plonker, some suspects can smoke, apply make up, not handcuffed.

They can also burn down the police station, do a runner etc.

Maybe these girls were allowed so much freedom because they offered the policemen a little bit of fun later.

For effective investigation, you don't want suspects feeling relaxed. When they are stressed a little bit, they get confused and reveal information unintentionally.

Just shows the primitive level of criminal investigation and justice here.

Are police stations not government buildings? What makes them different from the others (reference smoking)?

Unless they have been escorted to a designated smoking area, I think the legal advice may be slightly flawed.

This statement from the attorney generals office is absolute garbage. There is a set Police arrest procedure which includes the removal of mobile phones, bags, jewelry, make up, watches hand bags, belts, shoes, socks and handcuffs all times outside the cells etc etc. The police make and break the maleable laws and regulations at will within this Police State.

I was wrongly arrested back in England when I was 19. Some drunkard had smashed a window in the town centre and they picked me up for it. I was a bit drunk myself so was a bit annoyed when they're were questioning me about something I had no idea about. Anyhoo, I got handcuffed and thrown into the back of the meat wagon. Two officers were always with me during the whole ordeal. They booked me in and threw me in a holding cell. Next morning they woke me up, and two officers escorted me to the interview room. I said I was a drunk but was just walking home. I didn't smash any window and they could ask my friends who I was with until the point I was walking alone. They said they kept me overnight 'cos I wasn't very coherent or forthcoming.

I was accused of smashing a window, and they followed protocol exactly. They even removed my belt when in my cell so I couldn't hang myself, etc. There was no protocol followed here. It is now all being made up as they go along. If the public are not aware of potentially dangerous suspects being allowed to sit together uncuffed, chatting and applying make-up, it's because it makes zero sense and is shockingly unprofessional.

Absolutely amateur stuff again from the police. I look forward to them threatening to sue for defamation instead of taking responsibility for their ineptitude.

Apparently no 'Harvard for Police' as in the LEGO Batman movie here in Thailand... All the story of this 3 shitbags is just ridiculous, let them smoke, make up, take them to a road trip to meet the parents of the victim... This is how they want to run the place let them work...

What, like allowing girlfriends to visit so they can then escape?

I am not sure what's more disturbing, the fact that criminals are being treated like you'd invite a friend over or the fact that criminals have that level of audacity to be feeling that relaxed. When you have reasonable chances to walk away with murder, might as well act the part, eh?

Am I right in assuming these 3 suspects have been or are about to be arrested for the slaying of that poor girl..?

If so I do not remember seeing any photos portraying the 2 Burmese youths smiling in custody..(you all know who I'm talking about), nor any pics of them without shackles, & with mobile phones, & eating cakes (as I saw in a photo yesterday)...

...It would seem that up north the women get a softly-softly approach when a confession is needed, but in Samui it's a beating till they

 confessed under duress..!

Jees, choose a less hot case to make generic statements about detainee rights, no?

Ok nevermind, foot back in mouth.
