BANGKOK, 6 June 2017 (NNT) – The government has hosted the Stop Human Trafficking Day 2017 event, during which the Prime Minister affirmed that much progress has been made in the fight against human trafficking.

This afternoon, Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha presided over the opening ceremony of an annual event to commemorate Stop Human Trafficking Day, which falls on June 5 of every year. Among those attending the ceremony were related ministers, foreign ambassadors and diplomats, and representatives of various organizations.

According to the Prime Minister, the government has been committed to ridding the country of human trafficking, citing its success in prosecuting a total of 333 human trafficking cases over the past year. Of these cases, he said most were related to prostitution, at about 75 percent, followed by forced begging.

In order to sustainably tackle the problem, Gen Prayut insisted that the government has made the prevention and suppression of human trafficking a national agenda while laws have been amended to boost the efficiency of the judicial process and ensure protection for victims.

As Thailand has submitted its report to the US regarding the human trafficking situation, the premier expressed hope that the annual Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report, to be released by the US around the end of this month, will give Thailand a better ranking. The country last year received an upgrade from Tier 3 to Tier 2 Watch List.

Where does Thailand belong?

The reporting period for the U.S. Department of State’s 2017 Trafficking in Person (TIP) report closed on March 31, 2017 but according to the 2016 report in the Asia-Pacific region:

Tier 1 - Taiwan, South Korea

Tier 2  - Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia

Tier 2  Watch List - China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand

I'd say Thailand is in good company to remain in the Tier 2 Watch List.
