Nightlife was forcibly closed again last night (Friday) at 1am in chaweng supposedly to help prevent crime - <deleted>?

samui is rapidly becoming a shit hole populated by loud Chinese tourists who spend most of their time walking in the middle of the road - and old grumpy white men compalining about the noise

samui used to be a party island now it believes it's own hype - soon it will collapse in on itself

What next... Helmet, driving licence, drunk driving controls..

1.40 AM in south Chaweng, still party....

Its long overdue that the nightly battles between local youth and tourists be stopped and also the gun crime in the Central Chaweng area.

Ye reap what ye sow unfortunately and this has been Samui for a good number of years.

I'm glad to hear the police are now tackling at least one of Samui's problems.3

What law? bars can open until 2am - they do this once a month it's a nonsense and as for Road safety enforcement no chance they would rather just spoil people's fun than do anything useful

Lmao nightly battles between local youths and tourists you read too much thai visa - I go to green mango most nights and have only EVER seen one fight and that was two tourists and was stopped in seconds - I see much much more violence in nightclubs in the west.

if you think nightlife is one of Samui's problems see what happens to this cesspit if they shut it down and young tourists stop coming

Start drinking earlier?

In Baan Por, and probably other places around the island, any loud music is supposed to stop at 10 pm ....

Samui used to be a "party island"  yeah right, I think not ....Once again Samui is painted with one brush...  Chawang is not all of Samui.

I am not a drinker, so I don't really know these things.

What happens between 1 AM and 2 AM that doesn't happen earlier?

Cheers

Nowhere gets busy until after 12 not much point going to a club before then - most places in the world nightlife goes on 3am minimum samui needs to grow up or lose out

10pm lol I bet you are the life and soul of the party - in chaweng it's 2am since military control but they randomly shut it down once a month whenever they feel like it - yes chaweng is not all of samui but without chaweng Samui's income collapses and that's not an overstatement

The law is 12 o'clock unless you have a night club permit.

Right which green mango does - allowing it to open to 2am - talking to some thai friends it looks like this all comes down to money and police bribes not being paid - as soon as they are it will be business as usual and the sudden urge to stop the "crimewave" will rescind again

Probably some new guys that need to do what they do without taking into account the consequences to local Thai economy, it's a pity

We live just close enough to hear the bass beat from one "protected" nightclub in Lamai. When they closed at 5am the silence used to wake me. It's gone now, but not missed.

One can only obtain a night club permit in an entertainment zone. Samui has no entertainment zones. Hence ALL establishments officially will need to close at midnight. This has been the law since as long as I can remember. But it always amazes me how many people are not aware of this law. And this includes plenty of bar and club owners on Samui.

Well that's funny cos I have been to Green Mango many times over the years and have personally witnessed a shooting there, pitched battles between Thais and young tourist groups, battered senseless tourist in the old Solo bar, numerous altercations with knives being produced.

Not to mention the harrassment by locals of anyone attempting to stagger home after 3am.

Its a wonderful part of the island and nothing is amiss of course.

Carry on.

Strange I go there nearly every night And have never seen anything for a start hardly any Thais go there other than girls - I don't want to call bullshit on what you are saying but I live here and have been there maybe 100 times and never seen any violence at all. Maybe you picked a bad night on your holiday ? Or maybe this was a long time ago although I've been going there on and off for 20 years

I wonder why they are closing it at 1am then ? Last three nights now this has been the case - way to kill tourism and Samui's economy along with it - maybe the old timers chugging there three 50 baht beers a night will save it ? Or th Chinese who never leave their hotels other than to walk in the middle of the road lol

I am not up on the bar scene, but can I suggest a change of venue if you are looking for late nights?

An earlier post in this thread mentioned south Cheweng as being open late.

I ride my bicycle at pre-dawn/dawn every morning through Mae Nam and Bang Po, and I see several bars (that have customers) open still at that time. The only difference that I can tell is that the music isn't loud.

Or, perhaps a night in Lamai?

If Cheweng/soi mango is being targeted, that usually means that other areas aren't.

My two cents...

I don't really like the bar scene to be honest sititng there watching sport or playing connect 4 with some bored thai girl - their isn't really much to offer in terms of clubs other than green mango or ark bar which is a shame as it never used to be tnat way. There is Nikki beach in lips noi but that's the other side of the island - green mango is an institution it's been going 27 years before most of the over development would be a shame to see it suffer

It's a Dictatorship turning into a Tyranny.

The will of the dictator is forced onto the population.

That's the very definition of a Tyranny.

It's all across the Island !

As most bars are pretty empty anyway [Soi Green Mango is usually empty until 23.00] it will mean problems !

The question is: How long will the Thai people allow their [so called] Government to treat them like little children

and getting them broke by doing so ?

Tyrannies  never worked out throughout history and I doubt it will be different this time.
