Underage prostitution crackdown focuses on six zones nationwide

Anti-human trafficking police plan to target six zones nationwide to crack down on underage prostitution.

Deputy chief Pol Colonel Mana Kleepsattabut of the Anti-Human Trafficking Division (AHTD) said on Thursday that they had identified six high-risk areas, following instructions from the prime minister and the national police chief to gather human trafficking and prostitution crime statistics.

The areas include Bangkok’s Huai Kwang and Phra Nakhon districts; the North’s Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai provinces; the Northeast’s Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Sakhon Nakhon and Nakhon Ratchasima; the Central region’s Nakhon Pathom, Pathum Thani, Chacherngsao, Samut Prakan and Samut Sakhon; the South’s Phuket and Songkhla; and the East’s Chon Buri and Rayong.

The action follows a raid on Tuesday on the V2 Entertainment massage parlour in Bangkok’s Wang Thong Lang district where a gang using the Facebook page “Amara Bee” allegedly lured girls under 18 into prostitution.

The raid, in which police arrested a male employee, took place at the same time that another police team nabbed three unnamed local politicians in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Pak Chong district for allegedly buying sexual services from underage girls. Another team also arrested Pak Chong resort caretaker Winai Jaengploy, 56, on the same charge.

The five men maintained their innocence.

The elusive Thipaporn “Madam Pu” Maneenoi – who is wanted for allegedly being in charge of account books and opening hotel rooms for girls to wait for customers – has reportedly contacted police to surrender.

The case stemmed from an AHTD operation in May that arrested “Amara Bee”, a 15-year-old girl who sought commissions by procuring girls, in a sting operation. A runaway 14-year-old girl and five other underage girls who were lured into prostitution in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Muang district were rescued.

More victims uncovered in the probe told police they were taken to sell sex services in both Nakhon Ratchasima and Bangkok, which led to the AHTD’s “From Korat to V2” operation earlier this week.

Nakhon Ratchasima Governor Wichien Chantaranothai said if the police probe deemed the three Pak Chong politicians were guilty, they would get disciplinary punishments. One of the arrested men was a Tambon Administrative Organisation president.

He said a fact-finding panel was set to look into the allegations against the politicians.

That's why it's time to make it legal.

So workers have to be registered. To prevent underage girls working. To make sure these sex workers received health and safety benefits and are not abused.

So it's safer for the customer to cut down on STDs.

So tax and revenue can be properly collected and not as bribes into the pockets of corrupted officials.

So tax and revenue from this source of entertainment businesses can be used for education and help children from under privilege families so that their children can have a better future and not be exploited because of their poverty.

Thailand's known for its seedy underbelly, but the authorities ignore it like it doesn't happen and preach good values and morals. Just one big sanctimonious show where everyone knows what's going on.

By making it legal they're admitting it happens and it's rife. That's a huge loss of face in culture where pretending is more important than being. So the same old sorry show goes on.

It's kind of difficult to crack down on something the government and TAT have been denying exists in Thailand.  Has someone been fibbing?

Why don't I read Mae Hong Son there? Or has that scandal already been forgotten. In fact, why not extend this so-called crackdown across all 77 provinces? Perverted politicians and other pedophiles do exist there, too, ya know.

It's about Thailand cleans up it's act. 'Girlie' bars should be banished. Not the sort of image Thailand should be portraying, given the most visitors that are coming from Asia itself.

This is not about girly bars. Anyway you will find plenty of Asian men in Thailand in P4P places. What Christian planet do you come from?

"'Girlie' bars should be banished."

Can you define "girlie bars", and where would you banish them to?

As to Asian visitors, what do you suppose many Arabs come here for, the quality of the Arabica at Starbucks  ?

There is no prostitution in Thailand - why don't you get it!

If the police probe deemed the three Pak Chong politicians were guilty, they would get disciplinary punishments = inactive posts for a while followed by re-instatement and compensation for fringe benefits derived from. One of the arrested men was a Tambon Administrative Organisation president = his inactive posting could be early retirement = full pension without working again.

He said a fact-finding panel was set to look into the allegations against the politicians = let's see who sits and who runs the panel.

Pathetic

If the authorities would legalize this profession for over 20 year olds  they could really clean up the underage thing.

All done with special licence issue then anybody (including customers  caught is prosecuted.

OOps sorry, jails not big enough

Underage (as in 16 and 17 years olds) have always been working in the brothels and massage parlours and the like in Thailand.  Many use older sisters/cousins id to cover any questions from the authorities. This is encouraged by the pimps and brothel owners.  There is a difference between the girls who see prostitution as a career choice and those who are pushed or forced/sold into it.

Prostitution is common in most countries in the world.  Thailand is well known for it through places like Pattaya where they openly pitch for western male tourists.  In reality just about every town in Thailand has a brothel or two for the locals but they are not lit up in neon.

It's a national disgrace that any country would take such a passive view of child abuse. Hopefully they are actually going to get serious about this. If an adult woman wants to engage in the sex trade then fine. But keep the kids out of it. What kind of society lets this kind of thing occur? And where are the prosecutions of the abusers that frequent the places where this occurs every single night! And yes what about the parents who basically sell their daughters into this racket? Don't tell me you're poor.

It's a bit rich to criticise the authorities for trying to do something about underage prostitution, even if it's the tip of the iceberg and, most likely, ineffectual.

That's a very good question!!  What did become of the Mae Hong Son scandal and all the police, politicians and government officials allegedly involved???

I just did a Google search on that, and found almost nothing from local media past May 2017. In May, there were some items about about arrest warrants being denied for some reason, and another about some unidentified people being arrested and more arrests promised.  But no specific details of who, and zero followup on any of it.

SAD!!!! PATHETIC!!!

Under pressure from the press, national police arrested a Mae Hong Son police sergeant accused of trafficking girls into the sex ring and charged eight other officers with sleeping with the minors.

Five administrators from central Nonthaburi province have also been charged for allegedly hiring the teens with government funds during an official visit to Mae Hong Son.

Last week, a task force arrested three local officials from northeastern Nakhon Ratchasima province accused of having sex with teen girls — some as young as 14 — who were trafficked into an underage prostitution ring.

But experts say it is almost always only low-level pimps or officials who are punished.

“After police rescue the girls and handlers, they never expand the case,” said Ronnasit Proeksayajiva from anti-trafficking nongovernmental organization Nvader.

“They never investigate more about who the customers are.”

Three young women say they were coerced into the trade. Mae Hong Son's governor has had to fend off allegations that he bought sex from a minor, while a local politician from Nonthaburi province north-west of Bangkok confessed to the crime. Nine policemen have been sacked so far, including three accused of gang-raping a minor.

Perhaps most damning is the allegation that senior government officials visiting Mae Hong Son are routinely feted with food and drink, and offered sex with girls.

Add all those up, and that's A LOT of people being arrested for alleged crimes. Did they go to court? Did the prosecutors file charges in the wake of the arrests?  Have any of them had verdicts now about six months later?
