why do they never appear to look when reversing

nothing special just out to meet a couple of lads and when I get off the baht bus I paid and walked towards the the rear of the bus

to cross the road thinking that way I am not walking out into overtaking traffic. with the bus blocking my view.

looking to my right it looks clear so I start to cross over and bang a am hit by something on my left shoulder, it felt like I was punched

and I went backwards but managed to keep upright, I realised I had been hit by the bus reversing backward at speed.

I was very lucky if my wife had been with me she would of been struck about head height by the metal caging  that had struck me

I shouted at the person behind the wheel but he would not even look in my direction, the baht bus drivers parked opposite were laughing

as the driver sped off. this is my third close call of baht bus drivers reversing without looking....the standard of driving by baht bus drivers

is very poor and and because we see it every day we get used to it but it needs something done before a child or tourist gets badly hurt or worse

Road sense as us foreigners know it is completely oblivious on the roads/pavements here..............:whistling:

Had the same experience the other day on Soi Diana. I was about to give the baht bus driver a full-on rant but she apologised. Women baht bus drivers can give the accelerator some hammer too.

Baht bus drivers are not known for their good manners. Be thankful this wasn't Phuket. The onlooking drivers would have run across the road, attacked you and then demanded money with menaces.

I am sorry for your experience.

OP: If you have had 2 previous close calls with reversing baht bus why do you continue to walk behind the baht bus?  Here's a hint: Don't walk behind it.

If had banged on his baht bus, he would have came out with a sword...........and the others would join in on a beat down.

welcome to thailand, sadly that's just how it is here, either you accept it, stay calm and take great care on and around the roads or choose somewhere with a good road safety record to live

The missus reversed into a tree a few days ago and did some minor damage to the car. Her explanation was that she had been using the reversing camera since we bought the car in 2014, but on the day of the accident it wasn't working and so she couldn't see anything. The whole family agreed that the accident was unavoidable in the circumstances.

Once, an accident. Twice, careless. Three times, you deserve it.:saai:

don't walk in front of aircraft or behind buses, neither will have good results

Consequences have no meaning to them. Or they don't care much and nothing is much important to them.

Brain fuctionality is very important issue and it is a very common issue.

Please next time watch you left as much as your right since anything could come from any direction.

Be safe

This thread reminds me of an accident I witnessed a number of years ago.

Lady reversing a pickup onto the street. Another lady in a Merc driving slowly past.

The pickup continues reversing into the road and into the slowly moving passing car on the street.

The lady in the Merc asks the pick up driver - "why didn't you stop ?"

The lady in the Pickup replies - "why didn't you hit your horn and stop me ?"

----------

Another one...

I was stationary in a Car Park, queueing to exit. A taxi reverses straight back into my car.

The Taxi driver claimed he didn't see me. I was in a Range Rover, the only thing larger is a bus !

In the U.S. an elderly Vietnamese guy backed out of a parking lot space and hit my (Thai) wife's car on the side as she was passing.  People came out of the Pho noodle shop and started to coach the old guy on what to say.  They didn't know my wife could understand Vietnamese.  She was pissed.  Anyway, our insurance company went to bat for us since the guy's insurance had lapsed.

Driving While Asian can be a big problem.

Last accident I had was when a car stopped suddenly in front of me on my scooter and he immediately reversed. I managed to get out of the way but he ran over my scooter.

The car was being driven by a Farang.

And when outside of a condo beware falling Farang. Always look up as well as left, right and behind.

Perhaps reading todays UK news will show that reversing without due attention does not only apply to Thailand. In England a rubbish collecting truck reversed over two people sunbathing near rubbish bins! Hardly likely here with the scarcity of rubbish bins.?

I've nearly been hit a couple of times by baht buses reversing at 50MPH and not looking. If they do hit you, you would probably have to pay to repair their truck. And you'd have to pay the police a fine too.

Can you imagine the uproar if a farang reversed into a Thai?

Extract from the Hong Kong written driving test.

Q. The car in front of you is in the left-most lane with the right-turn indicator flashing. The lady driver has her left arm out the drivers side window.

In the above scenario, what can you be sure of?

A. The window is open.
