Taiwanese and Chinese suspects arrested in call-centre scam
By The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Police have arrested 18 Taiwanese and two Chinese people for allegedly opening a call centre in Bangkok to deceive their compatriots to wire them money.

The arrests were made by the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD) and the Crime Suppression Division (CSD) at the request of Taiwanese police.

TCSD deputy chief Pol Col Jirapop Phuridej and CSD Sub-division 1 chief Pol Col Thongchai Yooket led a team of police to raid a rented house on Soi Pridi Bhanomyong 25, off Soi Sukhumvit 71, in Bangkok’s Vadhana district.

They found 14 men and six women making phone calls in the two-storey house. The four bedrooms in the house had been sealed with soundproofing material.

Police seized several notebook computers, mobile phones, headsets and lists of victims.

Thongchai said the Royal Thai Police was informed by Taiwanese police that the gang had caused damage worth more than Bt50 million to victims in Taiwan and China. No Thai victims were found, he added.

He said the suspects entered Thailand on tourist visas in May and have been renting the house since then.
