Sugar cane growers ready for amendment to Sugar Cane and Sugar Act

 

 

BANGKOK, 17th July 2017 (NNT) – Sugar cane farmers and factories are bracing themselves for the crop’s price to be floated once relevant laws are amended. 

Head of the Public Relations Working Group of three Sugar Factory Associations, Siriwhut Siemphakdee disclosed today that sugar cane growers and processors have sent representatives to join a National Legislative Assembly (NLA) committee studying the Sugar Cane and Sugar Act of 1984 so that its quota system can be cancelled and the price of sugar can be floated. 

Public feedback is being collected on the move and will be taken into consideration. A review by the Cabinet and a final vote by the NLA is being targeted to take place before December this year so that the revamped law can be put into effect in time for the next sugar cane harvest. 

The decision to amend the Sugar Cane and Sugar Act is part of the government’s push to reform the sugar cane industry to give it greater strength and to reduce conflict with fellow producer Brazil. Amendments will seek to reduce state control of the crop and allow it to move according to market mechanisms. The 160 baht subsidy for farmers is to be cancelled and the use of sugar cane will be allowed in a wider variety of products.

Well, they were demanding subsidies in the past to get rich and now it is more profitable in the open market does, that mean they will pay back these past subsidies to the government.

What happens when the price falls? They'll be on the march then demanding subsidies from the government. What's wrong with the system is who gets the money? The small farmers get next to nothing and exist in poverty, while the brokers, factory owners, lobbyists and the bureaucrats get rich. It's upside down. These parasites are not worth what they are paid.
