BURIRAM: -- Hundreds of poor people flocked to a special free clinic set up yesterday in downtown Buriram to commemorate the work of the departed king's mother.

The clinic known as "Sonthaya karn phaet" is run by former Buriram hospital physician Sonthaya Watanakoson known as "Mor Jai Bun".

It has been run every July 18th for the last 22 years. This day is the anniversary of the passing of "Somdej Ya" the departed king's mother who was well known and loved for her own charitable works for the poor.

Sanook reported that there was a steady stream of young and old people at the clinic many of them farm laborers with a variety of ailments.

Dr Sonthaya does not do his good deeds alone. Nurses and heath care workers from ten provinces have come to join him in his quest to provide free care every July.

Others provide free food and drink and there are even such things as free Thai massage and free glasses for the poor. The poor can even get a free hair cut if they need one.

King Bhumibol's mother gained legendary status for her work especially in the north of Thailand where she was known for flying around to help poor people in dire need.

Many hill tribe and displaced people were aided in her programs.

The Buriram clinic celebrates her pioneering spirit in doing good for others and is now in its 22nd year of continuous operation every July 18th.

Sounds like he is doing some great work!

Makes you wonder why so many people need to make use of this service.

Arent they covered by the national health care already?

Its a day out for them and they save 30 THB,free food and drink and a haircut, why not.
