A SIX-YEAR-OLD boy died on Wednesday after falling into a coma when he was locked in a school pickup truck for hours.

Chanachai Kongphon was found unconscious inside the locked pickup at 1pm on Monday.

The driver subsequently admitted he had forgotten to make sure all the children had exited his vehicle at their school in Ayutthaya province in the morning.

“The boy’s brain was not responding to anything,” Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Hospital’s deputy director Dr Suchart Kittipat said |yesterday.

He added that after being informed of their son’s condition, his parents had agreed to donate his organs. “His donated organs can mean the recovery for several patients,” Suchart said.

The mother, Funta Boon-ngarm, said she had been trying to cope with the worst scenario since seeing her son’s condition on Monday.

“During the past few days I have been hoping for a miracle. But clearly it did not happen,” she said.

Dr Duangporn Asawarachun, a deputy director at the hospital, said Chanachai’s brain had already been deprived of oxygen for several hours by the time he was rushed to Bang Pa-in Hospital, where he was put on a respirator.

He said the boy was transferred to the better-equipped Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Hospital but key functions of his body had already failed.

Officials from several units arrived at the hospital yesterday to offer moral support to the family.

The boy’s heartbroken mother urged drivers to check that all children had exited their vehicles when they reached their destinations.

“Please check every time. Young kids cannot yet help themselves. Had the driver been more careful, my family would have not suffered such a loss,” she said.

The family has donated Chanachai’s eyes and heart to the Thai Red Cross Society.

Boonlert Wattakee, the 57-|year-old pickup driver, turned himself in to police to face charges on Tuesday. Police will charge him with recklessness causing death and operating a transport service without a licence.

The driver and his family have refused to be interviewed.

In a similar incident last year, a three-year-old girl died inside a school van in Samut Prakan province.

This is really sad. A terrible and needless tragedy which should never be able to happen if supposedly responsible people had their wits about them.

I have to take my hat off to the  bereaved family for agreeing to donate his organs so some other child might live.

RIP little man. I hope justice is served for you, which does NOT mean making some bloody merit at the temple and thinking that makes it all OK.

Without doubt the story is the saddest thing I've read so far this week.

A terrible tragedy. Unfortunately wits are in short supply in Thailand. It will happen again and again all there will be is some token handwringing and a few days in the temple. Nothing anyone can do.

Agree with most TV members here.

My heart is thumping as I read this.

Kudos to the family for making such a generous decision to donate while under such duress.

So sad. So senseless.

I hope that the bus or rather pickup driver has to pay the parents for all costs of their

boys funeral, and is fired for driving any vehicle for hauling anyone but his own family

around. I would say make him lose his license but maybe he did not have one to begin

with.

Geezer

As much as our kids drive me batty during the 50km round trip to and from school, 90% of the time they are late getting ready and keep me waiting when picking them up, I would love to put them on a bus/minivan, however from the stories I read, and see how many kids they cram in like sardines in a can, and drive like they are insane, its never going to happen.

RIP to the little fella, strength to the family to go on, and a heavy jail sentence to the driver, which we know if not going to be befitting to the crime, in the LOS.

When I hear or read such things, I am so sad and cry. Little does the public know that in order to be an organ donor, you have to be ALIVE. Organs, except for eyes, cannot be used once a body is dead. It is a million-dollar industry so ethics rarely come into the picture. That child could have lived and even recovered despite what the hospital tells you. You should look into the subject because you should also know how the organs are extracted from a living being, but that is up to you if you want to know more. It is a disgusting state of affairs, but ignorance is bliss is it not!  May that poor child RIP.

Life is cheap here in Thailand...sad but true!

No mention of the school that was at fault for employing an unlicensed driver. Blameless unnamed. Not even an apology, let alone a pathetic excuse. Just incredible.

My thoughts also...the school should be named and shamed...and the big question...Are they going to continue to employ unlicenced drivers?

This bs usually happens in minibuses but how can this driver be let anywhere near children when he cannot even see them in an extended cab pickup - no mention of this in Nation story or if driver was sober? It is simply unbelievable. Poor kid.

Unlikely the school had anything to do with employing the driver and seems he was unlicened to transport kids anyway.

Careless, stupid, useless idiot by the look of it.

But 5 minutes in the Wat will fix that....

Utterly deplorable... completely avoidable.

did the parents not know their six year old was missing for several hours?

I don't really think I'm thick, but could you please explain how the parents would know, seeing as how he was sent off to school for the day.

Rubish i have read and seen on the news he was brain dead poor lad. They kept his organs going artificially. Organs are only harvestedvfrom the living ie kidney if you are a match and have given your full permision. The sensational partbof your post is complete rubish as you well know. Unless your from some wierd sect

How can he not notice a kid in a cab this small? Something very wrong here.

My nephew is 6 and can open a car door by himself and the drivers' doors of cars don't have child locks, so how did the boy not get out?

Also, how does passing out from (I assume) heat stroke lead to lack of oxygen to the brain? (Genuine medical question because I'm not a doctor)
