Hi all,

I am currently in Thailand on a 30 day stamp, which is good until August 24th. I've just decided to proceed with major knee surgery on August 16th at Bumrungrad Hospital.  I would like to stay here until the first week in September, to give my knee enough time to be fit enough to fly.

Is there a way to extend my stay without leaving the country and returning (visa run)? I'm staying in Bangkok (Sukhumvit area).

My wife is Thai, but I haven't applied for a non-O visa yet.

As a last resort, I can fly somewhere for a day and then return. However, I think this will look a bit sketchy to immigration?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

You can get a 30-day extension from Bangkok Immigration  in the Chang Wattana complex for a visa-exempt entry.

You could also get a 60-day extension to visit your Thai-wife, though this will require more documentation, and for her to be with you when you apply for it.

If you feel your knee operation will be sufficiently healed by early September, a 30 day extension is the easiest option.

If you want to play safe, pending any complications, the 60 day extension based on visiting Thai wife is your alternative.

You could also get a 90 day extension based on medical grounds if their were complications affecting your mobility and unable to travel and fly.

Do the 30 day extension first. If you feel not right then apply for a 60 day to visit wife you can have both no problem. Both 1900bht by the way

Thanks for the replies folks. I think I will apply for a 30 day extension tomorrow at the Chang Wattana office. I see that it opens at 8:30 and I plan on being there at that time to hopefuly avoid any long queues.

Is there anything I should prepare before I visit the office? Also, any tips on what I have to do once I get to the office? Or is it pretty straigh-forward once I'm there?

My wife and I both live and work in the Middle East, so she isn't here at the moment. She will be here for a few days post-surgery, so any extensions requiring her presence before the surgery won't be possible.

Cheers!

Passport.

Completed TM7 form.

Copies of passport homepage, current Visa exempt stamp, TM 6 departure card.

Probably some form of proof of your address.

TM7, passport  picture, passport copies is all you need for 30 day. If you need to do 60 day based on visiting wife same as well as copies of her Tabien and ID card plus you need her with you.
