A monk in Pattaya has been defrocked after he was caught in bed with a woman.

Phra Bunlert Jittaparo, 46, was in bed with Sukanda Jairak, 42, when a party of Bang Lamung police and soldiers arrived at lodgings near a temple in Sukhumvit Pattaya 6.

A video showed the raiding party at the property in the middle of the night. There was also a five year old boy in the room.

Monk Bunlert denied having sex with the woman - it was just a cuddle.

But he admitted it was wrong and not appropriate according to Buddhist precepts.

He said he would look for another "job" in the morning.

Tnews reported that Sukanda burst into tears as Bunlert was led away back to his temple nearby, ahead of his defrocking by the abbot that would take place next morning

Another monk, Jarae Chamhan, 44, was found in another room but he was alone.

Tnews called on the authorities to clear up the area as there have been reports of drug taking in the vicinity that is hardly good for the image of tourism at the resort.

Sadly, more and more ordained people find it too hard to resist the temptations

of the pleasures sex and wealth can do to a man, and once they got the bug,

the road to ruins of body and soul are are just around the corner...

Ordained ?

I think you are elevating entry into the Thai monkhood beyond it's actual level.

In most cases entry into the wat is short-term, often at the behest of family and many times as an act of cleansing following some misdemeanor.

Rarely is it a career move.

Good grief a monk breaking his vow of celibacy, i am shocked, really shocked.:cheesy::cheesy::cheesy:

Whatever next? monks accepting money!!!!

Surely someone is making up a story, as it is something that no monk would do.

Yes they are all the same, becoming a monk means nothing to them, only a way of escaping justice.

Becoming a monk??? Nowadays, that is same as escaping a prison sentence for an illegal act. :cheesy:

Also, frequently to avoid working for a living, pretending to be contrite over some serious or not-so-serious matter or just hiding from someone over a criminal activity that went wrong.  Yep, there are good and bad; and way to many bad!!!!

"Sin City" not just for the tourists

Absolutely ridiculous 'journalism'. Pattaya represents a small percentage of prostitution nationally. Does, however, bring in tourist money for everyone who works there and other similar tourist areas, to support themselves and their families which is more than the 'government' does. Sin City? Thai's murdering/killing people and getting away with it. 'SIN'? Corruption. SIN? ABSOLUTE RUBBISH STORY. ABSOLUTE RUBBISH HEADLINE.

What percentage...I'm curious...do you have verified figures?

Over 90% at a guess (although I have seen figures of up to 98% mentioned on this site) of prostitution in Thailand is for Thais. Places like Pattaya, Pukhet, Sukhumvit are just a drop in the ocean. How many karaoke bars, 'massage' shops do you think there are in Thailand that are not in tourist areas? I do not live in a tourist area. I live just outside BKK and I reckon if I went 1 hr in any direction there would be 100's. Think of Issan. Thousands of karaoke bars. I don't think one really needs "verified" stats to know that most prostitution in Thailand isn't for 'servicing' foreign tourists.

I wonder how the number of "bad" (monks) compare with the western priests molesting, raping and dehumanizing minors, oprhans etc.

On some occasions it might be nice to be invited to a defrocking.   One example might be above as long as it was a mutually consented defrocking of course, as I am a very politically correct guy.  I didn't say PC in case someone thought I meant BIB.

So being a monk is classed as a job then?

No different from sending kids out to sell gum and take their money when they get back.  It's the job of "respectable" begging.

On the contrary, it's a very accurate headline:

Well done. Last 3 words of my post. I believe this is called being selective. Having re-read my post I can see your point. My entire post is about the headline. Once again well done.

Well I could have used the select key, but I thought it was obvious you were objecting to the description of Pattaya as Sin City, which takes most of the second half of your rant. You write as though you've never heard of the expression "Sin City" which in common usage has little to do with the way you define sin. From the article:

"Sin City is an urban area (a city or part of) that caters to various vices. These vices may be legal (depending on area) or illegal activities which are tolerated.

Examples of vices include sex-related services (prostitution, strip clubs, sex shops, etc.), gambling (casinos, betting shops, etc.), or drug use (alcohol, marijuana, etc. consumption), and even excessive organized crime and gang activity. If the city is known for prostitution, it is often called a red-light district, as in Amsterdam, Netherlands."

Although this most accurately describes Amsterdam, it's hard to not apply it to Pattaya (which is the first in the list of notorious Sin Cities around the globe listed). The term also applies to Bangkok, Las Vegas, they even mention Soho in London which is now largely gentrified, so Pattaya is in some esteemed company, and as with the other cities mentioned, it's this reputation that makes it such a strong tourist attraction.
