What on earth are these things in the footpath? Sophon stepping up the pressure on the authorities

PATTAYA: -- Sophon Cable published more pictures of problems in Pattaya in their latest moves to clean up the resort.

This time it was some mysterious brick structures on the sidewalk near the courts on Pratumnak Hill.

The offending items represent a hazard to walkers and are now just being used as receptacles for old drinks cups and other trash.

In addition the hazards have some handy spikes to impale careless walkers.

Sophon wondered what the structures could be for and said they had been there for many years without anyone doing anything about them.

Now they claimed that locals and tourists alike were demanding action.

Sophon Cable have become increasing active on issues from littering to roads to the state of the ocean in recent weeks.

They are the closest thing to a rubbish bin there is on the Pattaya sidewalks. They should think about doing more if interested in reducing litter

The problem with rubbish bins is that someone must empty them. Check out the Tesco shopping centers. Same thing. Somehow it's just not in the Thai government and building management mentality, yet they have street cleaners who sweep the streets. That employs people, whereas motorized street sweepers takes people's jobs. Thailand uses their assets, which are people. They just don't buy trash bins. Maybe they don't have bins because people would take them home.

Samui seems to be running out of green bins insofar that they have a high attrition rate

These 'structures' are used as rubbish tips. If you ever walk the 1000 meters from the Pratumnak/Tapaya Junction down to Jomtien - the gateway to Jomtien - you will see a proliferation of these monstrosities. Mind you, the footpaths on either side of this road are a disgrace. They are full of filth and rubbish and so badly maintained that Pattaya City Hall should hang its head in shame. For a city trying to promote tourism, it is a joke. It will never happen as long as the current thinking within City Hall purveys.  It's all head in the sand and they only see what they want to see.

Office worker sees all day two workers one digging holes in the sidewalk and a few yards behing him another guy filling them in. After work he asks the two workers what is going on?

Obvious says one guy, the guy who plants the trees is on a day off.

Sorry. ?

They were there to mount marshalling boxes for telephone wiring.

Note the concrete covers on the non-road side?

There are ducts that drop down out of those brickwork platforms into those underground voids so that cables, running underground, come up into metal cabinets, get joined together and then drop back down and go on their merry way. But then, as was noted, times changed and the cabinets were not used and removed.

I think you solved the mystery. Something like this.
