This whole dog and pony show is hilariouse. I lean towards all thailand is corrupt and dishonest. This way i am not shocked by daily life in the kingdome.

And that's why I maintain you should enjoy and be entertained by the place but you are delusional if you take this place seriously and that means not investing a single satang here

Will have to await court decision as to whether found guilty or not... but she's almost declared herself guilty by flight from country!

If found guilty, what basis could she apply to UK for Asylum? A convicted criminal, don't think so!!

On the basis that, guilty or not- she wasn't going to get a fair trial.  History is full of cases where someone has escaped before a show trial, or been judged guilty under a rigged system and yet they were granted asylum.  And not just in the UK.  If they don't grant asylum, there's a dozen other countries standing in line.  It's not as if any stand to lose much if their diplomatic relations with Thailand deteriorate.

Yes its a fair comment, but they are not alone people. This stuff goes on everywhere. Its not about politics, its all about money.

There is zero chance any wealthy Thai politician will go through the UK asylum procedure.

As evidenced by her big brother, of course.

So you don't think that Australian politicians can be bought ? The only thing that might stop Australia giving her a Passport straight away is that America might not like it .

In any case isn't Montenegro the country of choice for fugitive Thai ex-PM's needing new passports?

Well, known by you anyway.

Since the "music" seemed to entail a long jail sentence, with all the attendant " health risks" that may entail (has for others recently) then maybe it was a sensible and very understandable decision.

Now, as a man of undoubted courage, if you were offered the choice between 10 years in jail, at the hands of a junta, some of whose members would regard your death as a positive political step, or a lift to the Cambodian border, what would you do? Stay and "face the music"?

If I did not love my country, enough to fight for it. I guess I would leave.

The worst of it all is the loss of face to the whole Shin clan, from now

on they will be forever known as the run away Shins, not a bone of

courage and dignity to face the music among them...

and if any of the Shin's  siblings had any political asperations, well, that's

all gone to the toilet now....

Nah that's not how loss of face works, it might even be the other way around.

Can't do a whole lot of fighting from a prison cell where they don't allow the wrong visitors.

You sound like the Japanese who were honored to blow themselves up for the Emperor rather than surrender, or retreat to fight another day.  Sad thing is that Japan really needed them after the war was over, not their blown up remains.

I cannot agree with this assessment.

They might be forever known as 'run away Shins' by some people on TVF or by the military <deleted> or the yellows or elites, but the Shins are loved and respected by the vast majority of Thai people.

I would suggest that the Thai people are significantly more important than TVFPosters, the jaunta, yellows and elites.

The power is with the people; their time will come.

What loss of face?  The media is full of common Thai people thrilled to death that she's gotten away.  Any political aspirations the Shins have are only on hold until a friendlier bunch gets into power and lifts any bans, warrants, and other obstructions.  Which may happen and may not.  She may as well wait in London and jet setting around the world for that to occur instead of a Thai prison.

Her escape has only elevated her in the eyes of many Thai's.  I'd say "most" Thai's but I don't have any numbers to back that up, nor do I think we'll soon see any such numbers reported without a reporter getting prosecuted.

Her adventurous and thrilling escape just gave her a good dose of street credibility, I imagine her in a Lara Croft style outfit making her way through the Cambodian jungle, with just a backpack...?

A private plane just seems so common

She has lost respect from most of her supporters now. Thais dont like liars.

If the (yet to be read) judgement and sentencing was passed by a court operating under a democratically elected, civilian administration, then maybe your righteous indignation as a 'disgusted' UK citizen would mean something.

The problem with democratic elections in Thailand is that they are only the first of many steps for the country to become democratic to western standards.

Unfortunately for Thailand no government that I know of has advanced to step #2 and I have been around Thailand for 23 years.

You guys keep trying to project your own Western morals on an Eastern culture.

Thai's don't mind deception at all.  It's an integral part of business and negotiations and even personal relationships.

What they have no respect for is suckers.

Yet still the ever diminishing hardcore of junta fanbois still refuse to see the increasingly blatant evidence that the junta were in on it all the time. That their 'anti corruption' heroes are even more morally bankrupt than the Shinawatra family.

'Ha! But Yingluck fled the country in the dead of night like the thief she is!'

No she didn't. She left when she was good and ready with a 5* junta escort. How is your turd sandwich, by the way?

Prove it. show the facts to back up what you say......you cant can you?

Why? Asking as someone who has regularly spent time in Dubai for the last 25 years.

Just guessing here, but I suspect it was a (not so thinly) veiled insult of anything involving Muslims...

I very much doubt that. I expect he leaving will not have changed many peoples opinions. Those who dislike the Shinawatras will still dislike them and those who don't dislike them will justify the decision made. I think 'loss of face' will be very low down their worries if at all.

I am sure if they wanted to push another Shin forward with political aspirations they would receive large support regardless.

But where would Tkaksin find another family member stupid enough to even stand for an election. He has a nasty habit of dumping and abandoning losers and leaving them to their fate.

There is alway Oak I suppose. The two daughters have more sense.

Ask Boonsong et all what Thaksin means when he says "Trust me. I will take care of you". Or even "At the sound of the first shot I will be with you at the barricades, IF I can drag myself away from shopping in Paris".

I agree. A couple of elections are not sufficient for Thailand to be called a 'demorcracy'. Along with demorcratic government comes responsibility. There needs to be a move on reform and corruption. Otherwise what's the point?

Geez.  The guys haven't spent a whole weekend in jail and you're already claiming they've been abandoned to their fate?

You may recall that the whole brouhaha in 2014 came to a boil when the elected government tried to pass an amnesty with a covert clause that would have quietly included Thaksin.   It's just a matter of time before they try it again.  And again.

In fact, if they were to hold a referendum today, I'd bet the population would vote overwhelmingly to pardon Thaksin so he can run again.  (Which would be a real kick in the nuts to all the Brexit guys who claim that the will of the people should always be obeyed- unless, of course, it benefits Thaksin)

We have no clue what's going on in the back rooms.  But I'll bet it's going to get interesting.

There isn't any point. The hardcore fascist / crank element on here are so brainwashed, they would dismiss God himself coming down from the heavens and spelling it out in letters of fire.

My question is, how can you spend so much time in a country and not understand the people or the way it works?

'Cause it's not a requirement to score chicks.

Edit:  Though it's very helpful to keep the chicks from cleaning your clock.  And your bank account.
