Required to file a tax return?
topt replied to HKexpat's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
I used to receive these forms when I was reclaiming tax on interest as others have said. When I queried it a few years ago I was told I could just ignore them. -
Paying National Insurance from Thailand
topt replied to Barnet's topic in UK & Europe Topics and Events
Agreed which is what I am having to do. However for me there was no point paying missing years prior to 2016, even though some were much cheaper to fill, as they would not have given me any increased benefit. -
This guy was recommended by my neighbour and he seemed to do very good work. However not cheap and generally quite busy. I am still looking for one for some basic door alterations as I found his quote a little on the high side. His wife is called Kwan and speaks English. 089 246 3615

Great Restaurant ! HIDDEN from the road in Pattaya !
topt replied to Social Media's topic in Pattaya
Place looked inviting. I have thought about going in the past but never got round to it. So looked it up on Trip advisor and had a look at the reviews. Last one on there from last year was not a ringing endorsement but may have been a one off......... -
Pattaya Dolphins Football Club Renamed to Pattaya United

I have never been but I now someone who goes regularly with a group of others. Tourists I know join him as well. They really seem to enjoy it - plenty of drinking from what I hear...... -
Yes but I guess they have to start somewhere and maybe better than not doing anything at all.

I don't think they have put the "tax" up unless you can point me to something I may have missed? Petrol prices are supposed to move in line with world oil prices as did diesel before they capped it.

Came across this in AskWoody which is mainly for pcs but this is specific to certain mobile chipsets - https://www.askwoody.com/2023/special-note-for-samsung-users/ Link to the original Google project Zero blog post - https://googleprojectzero.blogspot.com/2023/03/multiple-internet-to-baseband-remote-rce.html Has a suggested solution prior to updates being issued. Maybe this is how some of the recent "strange" bank account pilfering happened.......

I just wanted to say thanks to those posters who recommended Rocco Schiavone. The character and country reminded me of Aurelio Zen from the books of Michael Dibdin. I have just discovered that the BBC did a series called Zen back in 2011 based on the first 3 books so something else for me to look up in the future. Also just a general thanks as finding this thread really useful

Thanks as that was the question I asked earlier of a couple of posters but did not get a response.

Not sure if this is what you want - https://easylist-thailand.github.io/ I was only aware of it as it is possible to turn it on in the Brave browser as an extra content filter. -
Paying National Insurance from Thailand
topt replied to Barnet's topic in UK & Europe Topics and Events
Unfortunately that does not surprise me. Service levels seem to have taken a dive since Covid - I wonder if it has anything to do with working from home.......... They even stated to me last year, after I queried it, that payments could take up to 13 weeks to be applied to your account. Mine took 14 weeks....... Strikes on the postal side don't help either. -
It is not that simple. Will depend on a calculation based on contributions at the change date (2016) as to whether you would be better off on the old or new basis. Did you not see BritManToo post above? Caused a lot of people a lot of pain in the UK buy paying for extra NICs which bought them nothing. Money Mail Online ran a campaign for some years trying to get the govt to refund those contributions. Hence why you should take advice first.

Yes. Depending on how large (possibly more than $30usd equivalent) they may contact you and you may be able to get a few satang more on the exchange - this is done by SCB Forex dept in BKK if it happens....
-
Sorry but why would they do that - refuse to accept it? Danish Kroner is on SCB's foreign exchange rate page so think highly unlikely https://www.scb.co.th/en/personal-banking/foreign-exchange-rates.html

Go to his Thai bank (presume he has an account....) with the sale paperwork/taxes etc and get it transferred to his UK account. The exchange from baht to GBP will be done by the Thai bank and although he will lose a little it is the easiest and safest way.

I wasn't asked for one last week. Guy did not even look at mine which was from nearly 4 years ago even though I have travelled out since then. This can save a lot of time. Tell them you are there for a retirement extension and they should give you a sticker which will allow you to go through the exit door straight to the desk for a no. without joining the queue sitting on the chairs on the left.
-
Guys can you elaborate a little on this as I started to take a defined benefit monthly payment in this current tax year. I don't remember reading about this as an option anywhere although it makes sense when you think about it. If the scheme doesn't allow it do you apply somehow in your tax return or..............?

With Skype out you normally pay 5p for the connection however long the call and for fixed lines a very low amount per minute as long as not a premium number. Stop worrying and call during UK working hours or you are just prolonging the agony.....

Another Traffic-Hindering Roadwork Fatigues Pattaya Residents on Third Road

From the end of the linked article - It appears to have been completed already.........Or they have cleared all the cones for the weekend. Didn't cause that many issues that I could see and since I live round the corner from it I think I would have noticed. -
DeSantis seeks $98 million to fund Florida’s own military

My immediate thought was how would this work in an emergency if both National and Florida Guard forces were deployed but had different priorities....... But then from the linked article - Anybody with knowledge on how that has worked? -
Thai Central Bank issues new measures to deal with online banking scams
topt replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
The difference is I think that when a bank staff member is found doing something like that the bank will normally take responsibility and reimburse customers. In Thailand there appear to have been mixed reports on that kind of accountability. Eg. the case of bank staff in a Pattaya bank branch offering high interest rates but not actually registering the deposits.......Still not heard if that has been resolved for the depositors.
