I made no claim that Roth contributions are assessable in the eyes of TRD. I limited my statement to strictly the income generated on the contributions inside the Roth account. Your claim that such income is "tax exempt" is true for US taxes. I'm very convinced that the TRD will pay no heed to the fact that such income is exempt from US taxation. The TRD won't care if the income is generated on pre-tax or post-tax assets. I should add that only the income generated inside the Roth after Jan. 1, '24 would be assessable.

It's easy to explain to you.... impossible to make you understand. -
Heatwave and Climate Change Puts Pressure on Thailand

The largest solar farms in the US are located in the southwestern deserts. What do you think happens to the heat from the sun that strikes the barren desert ground? Your logic is so flawed that it can't even be called merely wrong! -
Of course I haven't examined every type of income in the USA, but there is at least one income source that is not taxed in the US but may be assessable income for Thai tax residents. Income earned in a US Roth account is never taxed by the IRS if taken as a qualified distribution. It is probably assessable in the eyes of the TRD. I don't think you can state that such income is "taxed" in the USA and thus shouldn't be taxed in Thailand.

PEA and Solar how low can you go?
gamb00ler replied to MJCM's topic in Alternative/Renewable Energy Forum
I finally investigated the reason for our bill showing two consumption amounts. The smaller amount is indeed the units exported to PEA. It is just there to show the amount exported.... we are not charged nor given credit for those units. -
I have been assuming that commingling of funds before Jan. 1, '24 is irrelevant. If I'm right, then it's not possible as of yet to have funds that "have been commingled for a long time". Is my original thinking correct? While writing this post I may have thought of one advantage of commingled funds. If you have diverse assets in an account, you may have some assets that appreciate and some that fall in value. It seems likely that you can easily offset the gains of the former with losses from the latter. If the assets are in separate accounts it may not be easy to offset the gains with losses from a different account. I'm referring to the total funds that would be assessable upon remittance.

Thai Bank asking reason for remittance
gamb00ler replied to jayboy's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Recently, a friend that I've known since before either of us moved to Thailand asked for my help in trying to transfer funds back to the USA. He and his Thai wife had sold properties that had appreciated substantially. The Thai bank did not ever ask him to show that he had brought any of those funds into Thailand. Perhaps that requirement applied in the past but it seems it no longer does. His bank was more preoccupied about the reason he was sending the funds. -
Your figures don't take into account the actual amount of heat that the air conditioner must transfer from the room to maintain the selected temperature. Obviously a well insulated room allows less heat from outside to raise the inside temperature. Less power is needed to remove less heat. The "average" consumption needs to be adjusted for different circumstances.

Foreign currency accounts

Foreign currency accounts
gamb00ler replied to JohnnyBD's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
I wasn't trying to get an FCD account... I was seeking the EZ Savings account @1.5% rather than using fixed deposit accounts. It's a lot more flexible and no need to bother with renewal at end of FD term. -
Foreign currency accounts
gamb00ler replied to JohnnyBD's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
I recommend that you call the SCB (027777777) customer help line and ask them if a foreigner on a retirement visa can have an FCD account. Tell them you aren't allowed to work so obviously no work permit. I checked SCB's web site and they make no reference to a work permit being required. There are so many stories on AN about bank staff giving incorrect information for whatever reason! SCB weren't going to allow me (on retirement extension) to open any bank account without a work permit. I told them I can't have a work permit and that I had checked SCB's website and no such restriction was mentioned. I ended up getting two accounts with no further problem due to no work permit. -
Both panang and Mussamun dishes are pretty popular in central Thailand as well. I got lucky... I married a central lass with an excellent family and excellent English... not to mention an awesome cook!

During my research for my financial planning I came across a Canadian government web page that will calculate the tax a Canadian expat will be charged on his Canadian based income. This link will take you to a page where you have to read a disclaimer and agree before getting to the actual calculator: https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/e-services/non-resident-tax-calculator-disclaimer.html "Our new Constitution is now established, and has an appearance that promises permanency; but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes." bt800,000 Intl. Transfer
gamb00ler replied to Jaymatheson's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
So far... this is the best answer to OP's question. A couple of years ago I used a spreadsheet to calculate the best method to send varying amounts to Thailand from my US based bank. For amounts greater than 21K US$, SWIFT transfers resulted in more ฿ in my Thai account. WISE was better for smaller amounts. I think since I did that comparison WISE has increased their fees somewhat. The OP can do all the calculations for his specific situation. It's not higher maths. -
Car tax ticket & car tax itself
gamb00ler replied to Robert Paulson's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
I'm pretty sure none of my 4 tickets was issued in CM province. That is the most logical reason that I've had no issue at DLT with insurance and registration. -
Car tax ticket & car tax itself
gamb00ler replied to Robert Paulson's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
Perhaps, as is so common in Thailand, processes, procedures and interpretation of regulations varies tremendously from office to office. One round trip to BKK and back to CM netted me 4 speeding tickets from cameras. Those unpaid tickets ended up in a landfill somewhere. I've renewed car insurance and registration three times since the tickets were issued. No difficulty encountered yet. YMMV. -
I got my Thai tax ID in CM at the revenue office in Nong Hoi in '21. I am on retirement extensions so I don't have a work permit. I tried to open an SCB high interest savings account and the bank staff got hung up while opening the account. I asked them "if I get a tax ID can you open the account?". They said yes. The next day I took a residence certificate (I think I used an expired one!), a Bangkok bank passbook and my passport to TRD and got my tax ID in under 30 minutes. The staff didn't raise any issue at all.

Shrinkflation All Countries Should Do This
gamb00ler replied to freeworld's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Don't forget that the standard of living is now much higher than when your father was working age. Housing is generally much better, cars are much better, health care is much better...etc. Most people seem to forget that living standards have increased dramatically. It's hard to say how much of the increase in cost of living can be accounted for by higher standards. -
I've been coming to Thailand for 20 years before moving here almost 4 years ago. Like you I gave up trying baked goods in Thailand.... they would look great but had no taste. When I moved here, we happened to end up renting very close to Nana bakery. I went in one day just before closing and remaining bakery products were 50% off so I bought some. I was very satisfied with the quality so I've become a regular customer. I've bought bread at other bakeries and been very impressed with the quality available now. You might want to reconsider your decision.

workaround to install Win11 on 'Unsupported' PC
gamb00ler replied to gamb00ler's topic in IT and Computers
I think it was '86 and I had made a big score playing on a blackjack team (3 friends and I) so I bought an Amiga 1000. The clerk was surprised when I paid for it using a couple of 'pink cards' that I retrieved from my shoe. Only other Canucks will know what those were. -
I don't really use Windows except on a virtual machine for those programs that I use rarely that are only available as a Windows executable. I came across this article and it may be of use to some AN members. https://lifehacker.com/tech/how-to-upgrade-your-unsupported-pc-to-windows-11
