In my case, the UK has a double tax treaty with Thailand, so my private pension is already taxed. But as it’s not enough to live on, I also have to bring over some savings each month. This is what worries me. How to prove payment of tax on savings earned over the years? How far to go back? Luckily I will qualify for UK State pension this year which should offset my shortfall to some extent. At least for a few years, seeing as it won’t increase. Also I am trying to see if I can pay any large upcoming bills using my UK credit card to reduce amount I have to bring in to Thailand. Will they be able to track that? I don’t know. I wish the Thai gov’t would make an announcement clarifying all this as they must be aware of the uproar and confusion. Even the tax experts don’t seem to know what is what. Seems like another ‘cannabis law’ fiasco.

Renewing my UK Passport at VFS Bangkok end of June.
phetphet replied to phetphet's topic in UK & Europe Topics and Events
Thanks. I tried that. Although the statement was in English, the address was still in Thai. I went to Bangkok Bank, explained what I wanted, and they had me write down my address in English and printed me a statement with that on it. Only problem is I noticed after I got home, they have typed a u as a v, so I think I will have to go back and get it redone. I don’t want to fly all the way to Bangkok and get application refused over a single letter. -
Starting to get requirements ready to renew passport at end of June. I know that VFS have moved to Huay Kwang area. I have some questions. I have downloaded and printed copies of application forms OS/01/01. Are such copies likely to be accepted? Proof of address: Went to both Kasikorn Bank and 3BB this morning to ask for a statement and a bill with my address in English. Both said "Cannot." I don't get utility bills such as PEA as we pay communally. So if I get either a bill or bank statement addressed in Thai, or a Certificate of Residence, would official translations of these documents be accepted? I have read that my Thai driving licence might be accepted, but it only shows a partial address, i.e. (House X, Moo Y). No apartment building name or Unit No. So might not be sufficient. TIA

No. I only take my passport along with the piece of paper that they staple inside. -
Long Wait for 90-Day-Report
phetphet replied to parallaxtech's topic in Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao
Better to get there early, before they open and just wait. That’s what I do. I agree the new system is crazy for 90 day reports. I did mine after Songkran, and there were long queues. The woman behind the counter saw that I only had my passport in hand and no papers and called me forward. Once I had the queue number, upstairs was only a ten minute wait. -
Travel while UK passport is being renewed.
phetphet replied to phetphet's topic in UK & Europe Topics and Events
I’d imagine the same. But I was asking about flying domestically to and, more to the point “from BKK” after doing the renewal. -
I need to renew my UK passport very soon. Am I correct in thinking VFS take your old passport while they are doing the renewal? If so, how does one travel without it? As I understand it, a passport is now required for all domestic travel inside Thailand. TIA

Driver's License Guide - Koh Samui
phetphet replied to khunPer's topic in Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao
I will need to renew both my licences next month. Is it still possible to just turn up and do it? i vaguely recall reading something on AN about needing appointments a while ago. Is this still the case? If so, is there a website or phone number to make appointments? TIA -
New Residence Certificate requirements?
phetphet replied to Can samui's topic in Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao
I too would like to hear if any recent updates as I have to renew next month. Two years ago when I tried to get residence certificate from Samui Immigration to change ownership of motor scooter, they refused, saying they no longer did them. Tried DMV and Tessaban without success. -
Russian Businessman Arrested for Alleged Assault, Illegal Weapons
phetphet replied to webfact's topic in Koh Samui News
Owns an Italian restaurant near Baan Bang Rak Pier? I wonder which restaurant? Near which pier? There are several. Sounds like one restaurant to avoid. -
I know that there is an extended holiday over Songkran, but does anyone know which date Samui Immigration Office will reopen? My 90 day report is due today. Would have done it last week, but for some reason I missed my reminder. TIA

The arrest of Norwegian woman part of bigger picture

Don't step on the Taxi Mafia's toes. They even shoot one another. -
I was wondering to myself the other day what the life of the battery packs in EVs is, and cost to replace them. Only because I recently read that insurance costs for these vehicles is soaring in the UK. The roads here in Samui are often flooded and drivers here tend to just plough through the waters. I would be very nervous doing that with a large battery powerpack under the floor of my car. I will stick with my ICE for now.

Help! Flickering for 2 years, running out of ideas!
phetphet replied to Sambora's topic in The Electrical Forum
I had a similar problem in my bathroom. Was like a disco at night with the fluorescent tube flashing. Also BTicino switches. Someone investigated for me and said the switches were faulty. He changed them and no more flashing. -
Unruly British man goes berserk on Bangkok-London flight (video)
phetphet replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
You would think the pilot would have returned to Bangkok for the safety of the passengers, at the very least for the aircrew member to be treated for his suspected broken nose. Can't have been nice flying twelve hours like that. -
Bangkok Airways (our favourite airline? 🤭)
phetphet replied to Tropicalevo's topic in Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao
I think they raised the late flight curfew time a couple of years ago from 21:00 to 22:30. I suppose they will want to raise it again to fit in more flights. Not good for those living near the airport, or under the flight path. Still…Money talks. -
Thanks guys. I finally got it working. Not sure what fixed it, but after clearing caches again and fitting a new Ethernet cable, I got Youtube working. Netflix is loading to 25% then saying there might be a network problem, but seeing as I am using a VPN to view U.K. TV, that might be a bottleneck somewhere.
-
Been watching tv via apps on my Nvidia Shield box and VPN. 3BB internet. Amazon Prime still working Ok, but today Netflix won’t load and YouTube opens, then after a few seconds shuts down. See attached video of YouTube to see what I mean. IMG_4107.mov I have tried clearing the cache on both apps. Anyone have an idea what might be causing this? TIA

Everything that's wrong with EVs ... an endless list
phetphet replied to KhunLA's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
I read an article a few months ago (can’t find the link) that insurance companies were working on flexible policies for EV’s that would increase or decrease insurance rates depending on where and what time of day the car was being driven. This would be done through charging stations. -

Xiaomi, which seems to be a good quality Chinese brand has PM2.5 Detector on Lazada. See attached photo. Others too. I have one of their Mi 4 air purifiers in my bedroom. Don’t know how much of a difference it makes, but the filters is trapping dust. It is a HEPA filter so is probably filtering out the really small particulates. Smog is probably coming up from Indonesia.

Post Covid, Bangrak has changed drastically. What was until 2019 a fairly quieter, more laid back area has become a gridlocked nightmare, with cars and minivans parked all along both sides of the road. Almost impossible to find a parking space. I think business owners saw that while Chaweng was dead, a ghost town, Bangrak seemed to potter along due to many expats living there. So they started investing there. Now it is full of the usual cannabis shops, massage parlours, small bars, and beach clubs. Plus of course all the piers for boats heading to the other islands. More tourists, and an influx of long term stayers brings more traffic. Chaweng and the ring road near the Fisherman’s Village are always jammed. Choengmon seems to be the only quiet place on this side of the island now. Wait until they build their often mentioned bridge from the mainland and then the true traffic hell will arrive. On the subject of motorbike accidents. (I too had one.) I was talking to my doctor at Bangkok Hospital. After saying he must be really busy, with it being high season, he told me surprisingly “No. Not as much as before. I was doing around four operations a day, but not so much at the moment.” I wonder if that is due to the lack of Chinese tourists.

When to renew UK passport.
phetphet replied to phetphet's topic in Visas and migration to other countries
Did you just send your passport to the Passport Office or make a prior appointment to visit and hand it over?
