  1. Correct. And only those who apply - paying the 2,500 baht application fee - are entitled to vote. While applications to stand as a candidate for the Senate will be open to most Thai citizens, only those who apply to be candidates will be able to vote in the election. Candidacy is linked to both area of residence and occupation. Candidates are required to pay an application fee of 2500 Baht (68 USD), which Human Rights Watch identifies as equivalent to “seven times Thailand’s minimum daily wage,” posing a key barrier to achieving an inclusive election process. Prospective candidates must pass a qualification test related to their occupational field before entering the self-selection process within their chosen groups. Voting will take place in three rounds: district, provincial and national. The top 10 candidates from each of the 20 groups will be appointed as senators. For more details on the selection process, refer to the Thai non-governmental organization iLaw. https://www.idea.int/blog/explainer-how-thailands-senate-elections-work No one can stand and defend this "process" as democratic.
  2. For the record it is NOT an ELECTION, it is a SELECTION. And it will be about as democratic as the sham "vote" on the most recent Constitution.
  3. OMG, who wrote this? It is definitely not translated from Thai. This reads like a seventh-grade book report, plagiarized from a fifth-grade report.
  4. Looks like he survived the rice buffet. Honestly not sure how much (more) input the military needs on "tackling national issues"? Their sole mission should be to defend the Kingdom from foreign aggression.
  5. 200 - 400 million on a spend of 519.5 BILLION doesn't "ameliorate" anything. It does draw more criticism though. https://tdri.or.th/en/2014/08/tdri-details-apparent-costs-of-rice-pledging-programme-including-bt111-billion-in-corruption/ She has a five-year sentence on her only remaining charge (tied to the rice scheme). That will be reduced to one year by Royal command, which means she'll have to spend six months under home supervision. Can't see her returning until at least a few months after the King's sixth cycle celebrations (~ July 28, 2024).
  6. Among the dozen or so "options" mentioned during this debacle... Lao Khao (from Chateau Jake Leg) Vinegar I'm surprised the Ministry of Education hasn't trundled along to buy this for school lunches.
  7. What is the impetus for the current government to deal with this ~ 10-year-old problem now? Why not just quietly destroy this old rice? I honestly can't figure out why they are embarrassing themselves with all these idiotic ideas and performances. I can only assume the dear leader wants this gone so his sister doesn't have this criminal, abject failure hanging over her head.
  8. I received ~ 20 (out of ~ 20; 100% submitted) Receipts of Notification using 37 baht return postage. Initially, I used 37 baht EMS stickers, then started using 37 Baht in stamps. During this period that was the recommended option here, by quite a few people.
  9. When I did mail-in to CW I ALWAYS used 37 baht in stamps or had the Thai PO apply a 37 baht EMS sticker for the return envelope, for EMS return. For the last few returns CW would apply a new EMS ticker. In rural areas, any old postage might work.
  10. This affidavit raises all sorts of other concerns. I think the brain worm was an excuse for other, more questionable behavior. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Affidavit Details Mary’s Decline Newsweek has revealed details from a purported 60-page sealed affidavit by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in a story that offers a jarring account of Mary Richardson Kennedy’s struggle with mental illness and alcohol addiction. The Richardson family has already responded angrily to the “scurrilous” sealed affidavit that’s “full of lies,” saying that Mary repudiated it at the time. The 52-year-old mother of four hanged herself in May at the family’s Westchester property and was laid to rest in a Kennedy plot, against the wishes of her family. https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2012/06/robert-f-kennedy-jr-affidavit-uncovered.html Robert F. Kennedy Jr. failed to get proper permits to move wife Mary Richardson Kennedy’s grave Permits are for the little people. The body of RFK Jr.‘s estranged wife was illegally exhumed from her not-so-final resting place and reburied without the necessary paperwork, Massachusetts officials told the Daily News. And in a shocking new development, Westchester death records obtained by The News reveal Mary Richardson Kennedy was discovered hanging in a barn at her Bedford home around 1:30 p.m. on May 16 — but not by her husband and housekeeper, as first reported. https://www.nydailynews.com/2012/07/12/robert-f-kennedy-jr-failed-to-get-proper-permits-to-move-wife-mary-richardson-kennedys-grave/ Autopsy of RFK Jr's wife finds antidepressants but no alcohol NEW YORK (Reuters) - The estranged wife of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. had three antidepressants but no alcohol in her system when she committed suicide in May, a New York medical examiner's office said on Saturday. Results of toxicology tests completed in June revealed that Mary Kennedy, 52, had the antidepressants Trazodone, Desmethylvenlafaxine and Venlafaxine in her blood when she died, a representative of the Westchester County Office of the Medical Examiner said. There was no alcohol found, the report said. https://www.reuters.com/article/idUSBRE8660J7/ Battle for custody of Kennedy body Details of the legal dispute were sealed by a judge, but it came as the Kennedy and Richardson families were finalising arrangements for separate memorial services for the 52-year-old architect and environmentalist. https://www.independent.ie/news/battle-for-custody-of-kennedy-body/26855207.html
  11. OK, that looks more like a loyalty/rewards type card, rather than some government-approved program.
  12. No. They don't. A Minister of Public Health can issue a decree reclassifying Cannabis as a Category 5 drug vis a vis the Narcotic Act of 1979 and the Psychotropic Substances Act of 1975. Any bill will be a generic umbrella-type document that lays out the various committees and organizations to be tasked with the implementation of medical studies and applications, which can be done quite quickly. In fact, that's already been done.
  13. I think the"plan" is to gazette it by 31 Dec 2024, with a 90-day "implementation" window. The original declassification had a 120-day window from gazetting (Feb 2022) to implementation (June 2022).
  14. Can you share any details on this assertion? Weaker than expected sales have been attributed to increases in tax, overall price, and expansion of the craft beer and non-alcoholic segments. I'm not sure that cannabis is a replacement for beer/alcohol. If it were I'm sure ThaiBev and Boon Rawd would get into the cannabis market.
  15. Can you share any details on your medical card? What medical conditions do you have? When did you buy it? How much did it cost? How long is it valid? Which government entity issued it? Which dispensaries require it? Do your online sources accept your medical card? I know medical cards were a thing briefly back in 2018 but I didn't realize they were still being issued. Except for those that might be approved as medical dispensaries, right? Methamphetamine, Crystal Meth, Ketamine, and Tramadol are significant threats to public health. I hope these get the same attention as cannabis when it comes to the "war".
  16. Brain worms are more common than you think. Here’s what doctors who’ve treated them say. Cysticercosis is caused by the eggs of pork tapeworms. In most cases, someone eats food contaminated with the eggs, the eggs hatch and “sort of migrate through the body, ending up in muscles or in the brain, said Hamer. The immune system then attacks the parasites and forms cysts around them that range in size from a couple millimeters to a couple centimeters. That can lead to irritation of the brain, which can potentially lead to seizures. https://www.statnews.com/2024/05/08/brain-worm-rfk-jr-parasitic-infection-not-uncommon/
  17. Yes, if this is the OP's first ext of stay then yes, I think an in-person first filing is required.
  18. Thaksin knows that during conflicts/transitions, there is money to be made.
  19. The absolute last thing the powers-that-be want is an educated populace. The Thai education system is working just fine, thank you.
  20. The PM is launching a war on drugs, which everyone knows cannot be "won", and sees "action" on cannabis as something easily accomplished. Making such a bold announcement, with firm dates and after a single "meeting", leaves little room for face-saving. Unless he's replaced, this seems like a done deal, unfortunately. Police "income" set to rise substantially. And Parliament will have to budget for more prisons.
  21. The "cost" for the Digital Wallet scheme is similar. Good thing votes are more perishable than rice. No clue why the commerce minister is raising this old issue in a positive light now? Does he think it will provide some cover for Yingluck's only remaining charge?
  22. Have you successfully filed online previously? If so, did you use the autofill option? Has anything changed? Address? Passport? Have you filed TM30 for the address? Make an appointment NOW, although all slots may be sold out through 15/5? Rejections, anecdotally, seem increased (slightly). I filed a few weeks ago (CW), approved within 48 hours.
  23. 3) Be happy with rice, fish sauce, and fish paste. Look, in 1974 this was an interesting concept, a "middle path" of sorts. Fifty years later? Seems a bit anachronistic, if not wildly patronizing.
  24. So he's been an advisor to the Finance Minister (Srettha, PM also) for seven months and he's now just getting around to "revitalizing" the economy? What's the rush? This government is part train wreck, part dumpster fire. Thaksin better have a magic wand.
