Do you take requests of things to do on your exploring? Since you are in the Chiang Mai area could you try and see how well the Expat Privileges works to enter one of the national parks for free that are on this offer? Maybe Doi Suthep-Pui National Park since it is in the area. https://expatprivileges.com/deal/8323 I want to try and visit some of the parks on offer but don't want to make a long ride to find out it is not really free. Note you only have 24 hours to enter the park after the request or at least that is what I saw when I requested one park.

Why does God >insert your grievance here<....?

I agree with this but I also like Jim Jefferies's bit about God and if he exists he is an A-hole. -
What Movies or TV shows are you watching (2023)
biervoormij replied to CharlieH's topic in Entertainment
I watched Dream Scenario with Nicolas Cage tonight. I thought it was an OK watch and something a bit different. I would not give it the 7.1 it has on IMDB but still thought it was worth my time even if it was a bit slow. Just watched the trailer before posting this and think it may have all the best bits of the movie. -
O-A Visa Pitfalls
biervoormij replied to Thomas72's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
You talk about getting a 5 year driver licenses with the O-A. This is not the case unless you already have a Thai licenses. Your first Thai licenses will only be for 2 years and then when you renew you go to the 5 year unless you are on a tourist visa. -
Where to go (for the people who've been everywhere already)???
biervoormij replied to USslugga's topic in General Topics
What is exciting to one person may seem boring to another so without knowing more about your interest it is hard to make recommendation. You don't have Buriram listed so maybe Prasat Phanom Rung or Korat and visit Phimai. If beaches are more your thing there is Prachuap Khiri Khanmn or Chumphon. Hope you find something interesting for the holidays. -
178/187 day split to avoid tax resident status.
biervoormij replied to bob smith's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Bob, You told us before all this tax stuff that you were planning on leaving Thailand by April of 2024 so have your plans changed again? None of these places sound like they have excellent public healthcare systems and clean streets which you said you were looking forward to having. I think it is a great idea to get out and explore the world. You have been unhappy in Thailand and a change may be good for you. In the past you didn't seem to like it when people recommend you leave the country and try something different. With all the money you have sitting in bitcoin you should really get out and enjoy yourself. Maybe I missed it but I have not read any recent reports on your spending the 50,000 usd allocated for high season partying. Let us know if you still have part of the budget left and of any highlights you are willing to share. -
Black Forest is the first one I thought of but if willing to go a bit out of town there is Coffee War or Suriyaland.

What to you use to track your finances?
biervoormij replied to biervoormij's topic in IT and Computers
For me it is more about tracking my finances than the specific details of my spending. I started using quicken to save me time and feel it has done that over the years. It took less time to sit down at the end of the month with my pile of papers and enter them into a program and let it do all the simple math and verify that it balanced with my bank statement. I could have done that with paper and pen but it would have taken longer. I could have also just trusted the bank to get things correct but was taught as a child you should balance your accounts monthly. I later did this with a credit card account and a few times caught false charges. I also track my investments and like being able to see the return or loss by just updating the current prices. You may be correct in that I earn to little but watching my finances got to a point in my life that I don't have to work. I feel it has been time well spent. -
What to you use to track your finances?
biervoormij replied to biervoormij's topic in IT and Computers
Thanks everyone for all the feedback it has been very helpful. I will start working on exporting some of my data to spreadsheets. I think I will delete most of it but think I should keep the cost-basis on my investment accounts. I will also try the program that @Rigsby was so kind to share. Thanks @Rimmer for an example of how to track my spending. @Lacessit hope you make it to that age where you are only living on a pension. 105 would be impressive. I don't get a pension so the idea of spending all my money in one month would be one great month but the next month I would have to join the flying from a condo group. -
What to you use to track your finances?

I don't have that program but have heard that the subscription fee is much higher than what quicken charges but a wife has many more features that quicken can't support. -
I have been using the program quicken for over 30 years. In the past each time I bought a new computer I would buy the latest version of quicken and load my past data in the new version. I think it is time to upgrade my computer but looking at quicken they have gone to a subscription type of service where I would have pay a fee each year to keep using quicken. Do you use something that keeps track of all your financial accounts in one place and would you recommend it? I am thinking it might be best to convert to using a spreadsheet.

Taxation of Ex-Pats pensions etc.
biervoormij replied to LittleBear57's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
I think bringing the money over before January would be smart. You don't have to spend it on the new truck but avoiding any possible tax seems like a smart thing. I have transferred money into Thailand to live on in 2024 just so I can live my life without worrying about how the Thai government will implement this change. I personally don't have a lot of trust in the Thai government not trying to tax ex-pats. I hope it is not the case but they already tax the interest I get here and they feel it is ok to charge me more in the hospitals because I am a retiree. -
Just finished my first Dunkel and all I have to say is. I like beer, it helps me unwind and sometimes it makes me feel mellow. Whiskey's too rough, Champagne costs too much, vodka puts my mouth in gear This little refrain should help me explain as a matter of fact I like beer.

He could go up through Nakhon Nayok and then ride through Khao Yai National Park. This would be the long and slow way and he would have to pay the national park fee but should be a good ride. I went from Pattaya up through Nakhon Nayok and around the outside of the park this year and the highway was not bad. I spent 2 nights before getting to Phimai but I made a lot of stops on the way and was on my 155 scooter.

I visited Wat Khao Angkhan at the top of an extinct volcano earlier this year in Buriram but seems the one you visited is different. Would you recommend a stop at Kradong Volcano if I happen to be in the Buriram area again in the future? Thanks for sharing all your travels.

What Movies or TV shows are you watching (2023)
biervoormij replied to CharlieH's topic in Entertainment
I finished the first season of Bupkis the other night and for me it was worth the download even though I would not give it the 7.3 rating that it has on IMDB. I seemed to have missed it when it came out and don't think I have seen anyone talk about it on here. If you are not a Pete Davidson fan or didn't like his movie The King of Staten Island this may not be for you but I enjoyed Joe Pesci as his grandfather. -

I think this is a valid point. I personally fear my US account being hacked or closed more than my Thai account but I should reduce my balance in my daily used Thai account so if I do get hacked I will lose less. Do you think the ATM withdraws without using a card that Thai banks offer is safer? I have not used this but may start after losing my card this week.
-
I had an ATM eat my debt card this week. I was glad it was a Thai card and I could go down and get a replacement quickly. I have a fee free US debt card but try not to use it often in Thailand. I have read on here in the past that someone had his US accounts closed because the bank said he as living in Thailand.
