What other interests do you have as you get older?
Woof999 replied to georgegeorgia's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
I totally get this. I'm literally about to drop 12m baht on a house, but I'm also tossing that up against: 1.) Buying a huge plot of land up north (6000 sqm). The attractions of the city aren't the pull they used to be, but would still be an hour's flight away. 2.) Build a man cave approx 20m x 20m. Double height single ceiling, polished cement floor. 3.) Buying a CNC lathe and mill (metalwork). 4.) Buying a ~15 ton tracked excavator (cheaper than you might think). 5.) Tinker every day in my new man cave making metal things I don't really need. Dig big holes that pose a danger to life and then fill them back in. I really am in 2 minds which way to go. -

Isn't that the wrong way around? Finite life is so full of meaning that you should make the most of every single day. If my soul was eternal, through re-incarnation, heaven or whatever else, then my ~<100 years living on this planet is so insignificant in the grand scheme of things that whatever I do day to day means almost nothing.

Pool maintenance cost
Woof999 replied to maskedman2's topic in Real Estate, Housing, House and Land Ownership
Depends how often you use it, whether you shower before you enter, whether you wear clean swim clothes and a whole host of other things. I've used many pool cleaners before giving up in exasperation. Some seemed to go a good job in that the pools always looked clean, but not one of them could keep the pool chemistry correct. The main issue is low pH. I've seen it as low as <5, which starts to eat tiles, stainless steel steps, plastic pipes and pretty much everything else. It's pretty simple once you learn and use decent test strips, plus it's decent exercise if you do it from within the pool. -
They need to change the smileys on this forum

You could tell who left what emoji up until earlier in the year (or was it last year), but a few snowflakes complained that some people were picking on them and hurting their feelings. No idea how anonymising the "hurt" made it any better, but hey ho.- 25 replies

Fortunately for the rest of the world, there are fewer people with this type of opinion each and every year.

Then don't use it. Free, legal, options available, at least one listed above. Stealing software is no different from stealing clothes or anything else.

Crazy biker maneuvers or habits you see in Thailand
Woof999 replied to scubascuba3's topic in Motorcycles in Thailand
You can't be counting no helmets, no lights, 3+ up and a baby, the majority of delivery riders? In 2 days you saw only 1 bad habit / manoeuvre from a local and 600% more from falangs? Strange, but OK. -
Crazy biker maneuvers or habits you see in Thailand
Woof999 replied to scubascuba3's topic in Motorcycles in Thailand
A little out of perspective and missing the point. There have been several threads about the foreigners in South Pattaya causing havoc and at least one falang pulling wheelies etc. All condemed. That doesn't take away from the fact that the vast majority of the locals are dangerous on 2 wheels. -
It's a 160cc Honda with a double front wheel. If it was a Duc or something interesting I'd understand.

For some of us the changes, if they go ahead, could have a huge impact. I was due to remit 5M baht+ to Thailand after 1st January. Money that was earned outside of the UK so has no tax basis there, and would be remitted to Thailand outside of the year it was earner, so no tax here either. The law change could make me liable for a 1.2M baht Thai tax bill next year.

People that can't drive a car without stopping at lights shouldn't have a license, regardless of where they are from. I guess you don't have kids here?

It means that, in a single day, you could probably get intimate with several sisters, their mother and likely an aunt or two.

Just my opinion of course, if he's experienced like that he wouldn't attempt this journey. If he needs the bike shipped from one town to another, busses will take it. Also available via many Post Offices.

It's not that difficult. In many countries it's the owners responsibility to identify the driver. If they can't they are responsible for the violation. Perfectly reasonable.

Taxi driver gets staggering 37,000 baht tip in return for a 677 baht ride
Woof999 replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
Why all the negativity on what might have been a job well done rewarded hansomely? The guy made a mistake and went to the wrong airport. He offered the driver a good tip if he made it to Swampy in record time, potentially saving several thousand Euros on new flights. He was rewarded well. It happens. Not often, but it happens. -
Not sure about Poster of the Year, but I nominate this for Post of the Year.

13 pages was too long to read. Read the first 3 or 4, so apologies if any of this has already been covered. IMHO the only way to moderate is to be firm but fair. That requires a short, unambiguous set of rules. It requires a banned world list that is at least 90% smaller than the one currently in use, and it needs swift, firm action taken on those that break the rules with clear intent. If there is any doubt, a quick, polite DM to the user to clarify their action will more often than not create the kind of mod <> user relationship whereby the users don't want to piss off their "mate". A mod should be a user just like anyone else. Creating and replying to posts, being part of the community. Being that very user you want to be pally with and that you respect, not because they have the power to take action, but because you'd feel a muppet if they needed to. You have at least 2 of those on here. Most of the others seem somewhat anonymous and I have no idea what makes them tick. I like the idea of meet ups, if only once a quarter. Get to meet your fellow posters, meet the mods. Form at least something of a real face to face relationship that is far more real than just a name behind a keyboard. Once the teeth are swept up from the floor, those remaining might get on.
